will 82 t/a shift **** fit 84 t/a

i did a search and only found reference from an 82 to 87 t/a.

i would love to get rid of the 84 t-handle shift ****. will a 82 or older, like from a 2nd gen auto shift **** work?

if not what would be involved in making it?
thanks.

Nope. Already tried with my '84 T/A. If you get a 4-speed OD shifter from a '83 Firebird or '82-86 Camaro with the round **** it will work.

well i thought the problem was that it wouldn't fit b/c the 82-83's were only 3 spd. so how could i get one out of a 4 spd O/D. i'm cornfused.

what **** from a 2nd gen. what makes it so it won't fit?
thanks.

Re: will 82 t/a shift **** fit 84 t/a

'83 was the first year for the 700R4 4-speed OD trans. V8 and V6 cars had it with it being optional on the 4cyl. The '83 shifter is simular in design as the '82 in the way the **** attaches. The '84-92 Firebird/'87-92 Camaro shifter doesn't have anything to hold the top push botton and release rod since the later Pontiac T-handle and Camaro square **** trapped all the guts inside. With a 2nd-gen or '82-84 3-speed auto shift **** the button and release rod will pull right out.

I should have said '83-86 Camaro shifter in the post above. Not '82-86.

ok. thanks alot for explaining it to me. i'll try to find one from an 83.

so if i can find one out of an 83 all i have to look for is the OD on the indicator,if its at a junk yard? that should tell me if its a 700r4. or i'll see if i can find the rpo in the car itself.
now do i only need the **** and its guts? or willi have to take the linkage too?

thanks agian.

i think you emailed me about this didnt you ? haha

if so i told you wrong regarding the 83 200c/700r4 info sorry

i keep forgetting that 83 was the oddball year and had both auto tranies

wierd...

i cant keep that in my head for some reason

i always keep thinkign all 82 and 83 auto were the 200C

dammit

anyways uhmm yeah if its got the 4 speed overdirve shift plate then its 700r4 yes

no RPO sticker until 84

so you wont find rpo in an 83

1984 is the first year for the SPID label that listed all the RPOs for installed items on the vehicle. If your car has one check the VIN on the label to see if it matches the one on the car. More than likely the entire console lid was swapped from an '84.

yes i am sure, i am amused by all the ppl who dont know that 84 was the first year for stickers in the cars

the trucks got them starting for 1967 model year, glued to the glovebox door inside, and is a very large label through 72 and then in 73 was downsized and made a bit thicker and glued on with glue that is weaker, and are still on the glovebox door, every single one got one but some of the 73-up ones get pulled off by owners over the years

i started out my vehicle enthusiast career with the 67-72 gm trucks in which ive owned at least a couple dozen of now and have collected tons of factory and dealer codes and books and sheets for

your car may actually be an 84 then

the 82-84 cars are all virtually identical

it could be an early 84 but VIN as an 83(built at the end of 83)

these cars had very long build runs

my 82 was body trim tagged 08E in which is august 30 or 31 1982 but its still an 82 somehow,
a VERY late built 82

most vehicle models that were built from june and later in a given year were considered to be the next model year,
but not the F bodies

its real crazy

good luck
