short throw shifter / hurst pistol grip shifter problem !!!
got a 91 camaro z28 convt. with a 305 tpi / 5 speed manual
yesterday my shifter **** broke (plastic) .. so i went to summit today and couldnt find any **** that would fit ..
a couple months ago i cut down my stock shifter and put some new threads on it .. they worked with the plastic ****, but were VERY messy ..
so today i went and bought a new proform short throw shifter .. and hurst pistol grip **** ..
took forever to find the right size and came across M16 x 1.5 .. is that the right size or is there another size .. ??
but at summit we tried the **** and it threaded perfectly onto the short throw shifter with no effort at all .. and now it WONT come off ..
tried everything .. the **** is aluminum and the shaft is steel .. ive tried heating it, and forcing it .. but nothing works
i dont care about destroying the $40 pistol grip **** because the guy at summit said he will get me another one for free ..
so anyone got any ideas how to get it off, or why it would "lock" on there for no reason..
also .. what kind of **** do most of yall run / prefer .. i used to have a big plastic ball, but cant find a new one ...
thanks,
adrian

new plastic ball available from classic industries for like 8 bucks or something.
is the shifter on the car? have you tried clamping the shifter base down and then using something like large channel locks to try and get some leverage on the handle? have you tried any lubrication?

Re: short throw shifter / hurst pistol grip shifter problem !!!
ok, i finally got it off ..
took 2 HUGE snap-on wrenches that fit the pistol grip handle .. and a HUGE set of channel lock pliers .. and 3 guys yanking on them all at once ..
i mean we were all breaking a sweat and it was only threaded on about 6 threads ..
tore out all the threads in the handle .. and really chewed it up with the wrenches / pliers ..
when we got it off, all the threads out of the **** were stuck onto the shaft of the shifter .. so i had to chase it with a die to clean it up ..
cleaned up fine .. but while i was at it .. i cut about an inch more threads and cut off the original ones .. so now its a short- short throw shifter .. i like it alot .. if anyone buys one i'd recomend doing it ..
REALLY crisp / firm shifts ..
neways .. got my new **** too .. decided to get a t-handle hurst shifter with the button on the side .. so later on i can hook something up like a line-lock or the horns (mine dont work right now) .. guy at summit looked at the old one and laughed, then got me the new one ..
if anyone is looking at getting a hurst "pistol grip" shift **** .. DONT ..
i repeat .. DONT .. the threads will bind up and it WONT come off unless you got three strong guys and want to turn a $50 piece of billet aluminum into $.50 trash .. lol ..
but the t-handle hurst shifters are awsome, fits perfectly and doesnt even come close to binding (used anti seeze just incase thought) and just feels alot better than the pistol grip .. that pistol grip started to hurt my hand after about 20 miles of rush hour traffic this morning .. and it was kinda cold
hope that helps someone that is looking to buy a short throw shifter / new **** ..
