If tranny fails is torque converter done?

I just put a new 2800 stall torque converter in my old tranny and within 20 miles i lost forth and third gear. Then on my way home i lost second. Is there any chance that the torque converter is still salvageable or is it shot and i should buy a new one.

O and i just bought a new tranny that comes with a torque converter that has a lower stall like about 2000-2200 can i run that in my car or will it kill the performance. The engine makes 355hp and 400 torque. Thanks guys. my sig has the spec of the engine thats in my car i that helps at all.

Check your pan. If theres metal in it I'd use a new converter. You just cant count on getting all the "glitter" out. Also either switch to a new external trans cooler or replace the radiator if it's old too.

If all you find is burnt fluid and clutch friction material then you can try filling and draining the converter several times with clean fluid. After installing the unit and running it it might be worth while to drop the pan and replace the filter.

EDIT: Allways replace the trans cooler when replacing or rebuilding a trans. I have never seen a flusher that will clean even most of the crap out of a cooler.

run the trans cooler in adition to the radiator trans cooler...ie. route the outcoming side of the radiator one into the standalone unit then back to the trans.....a stand alone air cooled trans cooler will not suffice, its not as efficient as a water cooled one like in the radiator,,,,use them both and get the best effect....

Some transimission shops can flush the converter for you.

If your 700R4 failed. Why do you think the Torque Converter needs replacement?? It is external to the sealed tranny.

the torque converter is filled with fluid using the transmission pump. the torque converter is what seals the pump of the transmission where the input shaft is. it is not a separate fluid system.

what you can probably do since the torque converter is still new is send it back to the manufacturer and have them open it up, clean it, reassemble, and return it to you.

If this were true, there would be A LOT of transmission shops out of business.

False. i work at a trans shop thats been around for 50 years.
If the trans is burned up or has metal, there no amount of flushing you can do to get all the crap out of the cooler. How the trans fails determines how we take care of the cooler. If the trans cooked and there was lots of debris. We will install a hayden bypass cooler. If the trans failed because of a lip seal or piston that went, and the clutches where fine. Then we flush the cooler. Mainly to get the old fluid out. There is a third option and that is to install an inline filter on the return cooler line. We rarely do this because if there was alot of stuff, in the cooler it will eventually plug the filter and that will cook the trans.

i'm not going to get into a big debate with you. i talk to people at tranny shops all the time in my line of work. you can flush coolers just fine.

Most can but if you cut the coolers open you will allways find debris that didnt get flushed out.

Exactly what he said^. You can trust the shops that promise it'll be fine and in alot of cases you will be but I would never reuse a trans cooler external or not after a failure or several thousand miles. For the money it's just not worth the risk. $1,400+ trans and your going to pass on a $30 cooler?
