where is my vss sensor and how to replace?

i have a 700r4 trans in a 1986 Iroc. i found the 4 pin plug that goes near the tail shaft of my trans but i have no way to see how to change the vss sensor. im assumming that its right there near the tail shaft. i follwed the 4 pin plug ACUALLY 3 WIRES. up near the firewall then it goes into another mess of wires. my trans shifts erratically and surges at cruise. im assumming that its theVSS. if its not then. i will find another problem but i would like to change it anyway just to maybe fix this problem. THANKS!!

IIRC, in 86 the VSS is a yellow box mounted to the rear of the cluster.

yeah, in a cable driven speedo car (yours) the VSS does nothing but tell the computer that the car is moving.

Did you ever try adjusting the tv cable?

If your speedometer in the dash works, then your VSS is fine.

Have you checked the fluid level in the trans?

YES ive checked the level in the trans and its good and BRIGHT PINK. The guy who had the car before me obviously did some trans work. Torque converter looks NEW from the outside. and the trans looks new or rebuilt. IN OTHER WORDS its the cleanest under the car. and trans fluid like i said is BRIGHT PINK. But i keep getting surging at any cruising speed. i was assuming that its the vss because it also tells the torque converter when to LOCK UP (from what ive read). Im stumped. speedo works fine. i paid 150.00 for the whole car since my friend owns a towing business. i have about 400.00 into it. so i cant ask the previous owner what was done to the car. its just a guessing game. it was towed from an apartment com[plex so there really is no way to tell what was replaced and what wasnt. just trying to get it right. as far as a TV cable i have NO idea how to adjust it and what it does. any insight? thanks

Thought the VSS was 2 wires 2 prongs? Thought what he is describing is the lockup solenoid

yes he is. Though he doesn't have a vss on the transmission since his speedo is cable driven.

Re: where is my vss sensor and how to replace?

Thanks guys for all your help. BUT i still have a lock up problem YES i think its the TV cable NOT the VSS. Ive tried adjusting it with WOT like the links that i have read. YES my shift points are harder and more precise. BUT my trans is still surging. sometimes alot sometimes less it depends on the way i adjust the tv cable. thinking now that i may need to replace the cable and mybe the spring inside the trans that controls the tv cable. Think im just gonna pay someone to do that. ill keep messing with it to maybe get the right shift points. any input on where i can get a new TV cable at a good price? I have a wrecked 89 iroc TPI setup with the 700r4 as well but the cable looks a slight bit different. wondering if i should just try that one or just buy a new one and do it right with new parts. any input would be a big help thanks again.

Re: where is my vss sensor and how to replace?

I believe in 89 is when they changed the linkage on the throttle body so just swapping it over won't work. I think you can get a tv cable at any parts store or it might be dealership only not sure on that one.
