Making the T5 Trannys stronger?

hmmm, I've been looking for a T-56 transmission for a long time, (Im going to get an engine with 350 hp with 400 tq, and I want to keep the manual part of my car, I dont want an automatic)
Well, as T-56 hard getting harder to get hands on anymore or find any,
Would rebuilding the T-5 transmission (but a kit that will make the transmission handle more Torque, so I dont have to worry my transmission going out.)

Is this a good idea to try, and has any one had experance with it?
Is it worth doing, and if so, where is a great place to buy a kit to rebuild the transmission?

I highly appreciate.

Tim

Re: Making the T5 Trannys stronger?

This topic has been covered exhaustively. The main weakness of the t5 is its case. There is a vendor on this board that "claims" to have a gear swap for the wc t5 that can handle upwards of 450 ft lbs. try a search on astroperformance.

I haven't heard of anyone actually using it so I don't know of any feedback on if it can do what they say it can.

Re: Making the T5 Trannys stronger?

the case is the weak point, gears dont matter if the case is flexing like cardboard. Gforce makes an upgraded case, you can buy a complete beefed t5 from them, problem, they cost more that a new tko600 or t56. At that point why bother going with an iffy beefed t5 that may just blow anyway? 5678TA runs one and so far its working for him, but many other people have nothing good to say. I would abandon the idea of beefing a t5 and keep looking for a used t56 or a new tko600 from fortespartsconnection

Re: Making the T5 Trannys stronger?

Yeah, I kinda figure the idea wasn't going to work in the first place, friend told me to dont mess with it, and just get a T56. My problem is I keep on bidding for a transmission and goes either two high or I just dont get it at the end. and buying it is usallly a tad higher then what I want out of it. (my limit is $1500 for a complete set... not just for the transmission) Even though I know what a normal working T56 would cost, but I am under a strict limit I made for my self. My parents gave me and promised me $4000, and that was it. I am working up the money to save for the transmission, but I have troubles saving money, (cause Im always paying for more parts for the POS camaro) and a few other bills I was told me be making.

The $4000 was JUST for the engine alone, and $1500 for the transmission, and later get a bigger gear for the axle or get a bigger axle.

So if any one has a T56, complete (well... Im even despret for just the transmission alone too, I just want to buy one really badly).

Let me Know!!!
Thanks

Re: Making the T5 Trannys stronger?

as 86TA said, i do run a g-force.. i've only been 11.6 but i've had no problems.. i powershift nearly every pass i make.. so far my trans has about 5000 miles on it.. over half of that is abuse.. heres some links..

http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/p...ngT-5.indd.pdf

i do agree with most everyone.. a TKO trans is cheaper and will handle the same, if not more than a g-force rebuilt T-5.. i just went the g-force route because the TKO swap was not available when i built my car.. and the t-56's were just starting to be swapped in.. i only wanted to go 11's at the time so it was all i needed.. now i want to go deep into the 10's and dont know if it will hold.. i've heard of the t-5's giving out at about mid 10's..

Re: Making the T5 Trannys stronger?

I looked for a T56 for about a month. I had the same experience with Ebay, so I ended up buying one off of a person here. Cost me $1000 shipped. Trans was in great shape, only needed 3-4 syncro keys, and a rebuild kit. The rebuild kit is $200, upgraded syncro keys and a 3-4 steel shift fork $100, a clutch for $200, and a new spohn cross member for my spohn arm is about $200 with shipping. So I'll be in it about $1700.

Edit: I forgot to mention I'm selling my T5 setup for $800. So, total for me for the T56 swap will be around $900.

Re: Making the T5 Trannys stronger?

I just bought my used T56 for a good deal from LS1tech. They have more available than this board & can be cheaper than eBay.
