blew the transmission?

So my firebird has been shaking badly when accelerating from lights but I figured it was something else... Then today I launched hard to race a hot blonde (yeah yeah, story of my life) and then BAM the thing just revs up and doesn't really go anywhere. It is in both drive and reverse, same thing. Shifting into park right as soon as it happened resulted in a bit of a grind but it did stop the car.. It is a 700R4. Possibly the torque converter? I can move the car forward slowly by constantly revving but there really is no grip on the gears at all.

Re: blew the transmission?

Yeah it sucks. There's no way i'm paying a shop to replace it as it would cost more than I paid for the car haha. I might buy some dirt cheap beater and just drop the trans myself, or do it at the same time when I pickup the 350 this month.

Re: blew the transmission?

It could be the rear end too possibly. When you put it in drive/reverse does the driveshaft turn?

Re: blew the transmission?

I didn't have the opportunity to check as I went and got completely wasted right after it died... But the car does kind of drive still. If i just keep flooring the pedal, it will slowly pick up some speed. And by speed I mean 5 miles an hour.

Re: blew the transmission?

Now that I'm sober, I'll describe more of what it's doing. You know that feeling you get when you move it from park or neutral into drive (that kind of bump), well it no longer does that. I cannot feel anything happen when moving between any gears except getting into Park. The car still does move verrrry slowly in the selected gear though. Most likely the converter?

I doubt the converter probably something more inside the trans.

Re: blew the transmission?

Trans fluid is black. Yay... I guess I'll see whatever else happened when I drop the pan.

Also noticed that I can hear it still going into gear (very faintly) while I was trying to get it onto my driveway off the flatbed. It still actually went up the hill a bit. But yeah it just slips like mad.

Re: blew the transmission?

Usually when the converter is going bad you will notice a vibration when the tranny is in a strain, like when going up hills or passing. At least that's what happened in a GMC truck I had.

Re: blew the transmission?

It would shake badly when slowly accelerating, but no problem at all when I floor it while already moving at a decent speed.

I think I'll keep it off the road for a while and rebuilt the whole thing eventually.
