What are the possible reasons that the overdrive would go out in a newly rebuilt 700r4 transmission? I have ensured the fluid was full, and I added about a quart and a half of fluid to the torque converter before stabbing it onto the transmission. Any ideas?

 

sticking governor, sticking valve in valve body, broken seal on apply piston, broken seal on servo apply piston.....

Yes, everything else is working just fine. I just don't have overdrive....

 

Here's one for you. On a recent road trip my OD stopped working (700R4). No reason. Fluid level was good, etc. Pulled over and looked for something obvious. Found nothing. Readjusted my TV cable as a stab in the dark. No help with OD and all other shift were too high as well.
Re-readjusted the TV cable and everything was as before. All shifts ok and OD came back too. The only thing I can think of was along the lines of a previous suggestion in this thread. Something stuck in a valve somewhere and it evevtually resolved itself. Might be time for additional transmission service, especially after a rebuild. I always change the fluid at least once after I've put a few miles on them.
I had been making a couple of WOT passes when all this happened. 50 to 75 mph.

Appreciate it, I haven't even put 100 miles on the tranny as of yet. I bought it from a lady who had it sitting in her garage. It was her ex-husbands. The tranny is a rock-o-matic....never heard of it, but did some internet research, and found nothing but good things though. I am going to check my shift linkage as it appears to be binding up on me now, preventing me from putting the car in park....couldn't see that from stopping the car from going into overdrive though....

yes, I had up and until the first time that I tested the detent cable to ensure it was working.

 

By detent cable you mean the throttle valve cable?
If that's the case it must be adjusted excatly as the OEM specs out. I have had the exact condition at another time (while adjusting the TV cable ) and overdrive wouldn't engage.
If your installation is a home build, you also need to be sure that you have the correct cable.

 

By detent cable I am referring to the kick down cable....I wanted to ensure that the car would go into the passing gear. After it went into the passing gear, overdrive never came back.

 

That cable on the 700R4 has to be adjusted as per spec. It's not supposed to be used to alter you shift points (like "passing gear"). If you use it that way, chances are you'll smoke your transmission. If your OD is gone now and you've changed the stock setting, you might want to think about resetting it. Your shift points can be controlled with other mods.

 

I did not adjust the detent cable...wanted to ensure that it was hooked up....

 

Make sure your brake switch is also adjusted properly. If it's backed out, the circuit will be open, no OD. Might test the switch also, make sure it completes circuit loop.

The TCC solenoid recently failed in my newly rebuilt 700r4 (it happens), thus no OD. Replaced solenoid, OD functions properly.

 

Checked a couple of transmission manuals.
No 3-4 upshift can be caused by:
Governor,
Oil pump assembly,
Valve body assembly,
2-4 servo,
Case ( missing or misplaced ***** and /or plugs,
2-4 band assembly.

Interesting call on the brake light switch circuit. My convertor lockup has been intermittent (and now completely gone ). I'll check into that before I drop the pan and wire in a manual application circuit.

 

Would the brake circuit be located in a Chilton Manual? Sorry, but what is a "TCC Solenoid"?

 

Chilton usually has a wiring diagram so the brake light circuit should be in there.
The TCC solenoid is the Torque Convertor Clutch solenoid. It's an electro-mechanical switch which engages the torque convertor clutch for full lock up in the appropriate gear(s).
