Trans shifting wrong--TV cable problem?

I just bought a 91 Z w/350 and 700/r4. It was shifting perfectly when I got it, going into overdrive at about 42 mph or so. Then, I had the throttle cables disconnected and plenum off to replace a bad egr valve. When I put everything back together I forgot to adjust the TV cable and noticed the difference in shift points immediately. I wasn't able to get overdrive until about 53 mph. So, I adjusted the TV cable according to the Haynes repair manual, but guess what? Now it shifts even worse! I can't get into overdrive until about 63 mph! And all my other shifts are way higher than they ought to be. I want to get the shifts back to factory specs--hitting overdrive at about 42 mph. Anyone out there have the solution?

Just keep trying to adjust the TV cable. That sounds like the problem.

Kevin's right... actually you might have it set correctly. The trans could be half-shot after years of driving with an incorrectly set TV cable.

My friend has an '86 Monte, and the trans was acting up. For kicks, I reset his TV cable as per the book. We went for a ride, and his car shifted much worse (later shifts, clunking into gear, etc). I immediately put it back to where it was.

I usually make a mark of where the TV cable goes into the slider with white-out. Then I re-adjust the TV cable as per instructions... when I'm done, I can see how far the original setting was off spec.

So, can an incorrectly set TV cable actually cause harm to the tranny over time? HOW SO?

Oh, definately. The TV (Throttle Valve) cable isn't specifically a kickdown cable. It controls line pressure (fluid pressure) inside the transmission. The line pressure is what determines how the tranny shifts. Less line pressure = TV cable adjusted too far towards front of car = earlier+softer shift. More line pressure = TV set back towards firewall = later+harder shift). If the TV cable slips to give the trans too little fluid pressure, the trans can burn up.
