HELP ASAP. . .SLP Take-off and Axle Diameter

I recently bought one of SLPs take-off POSI units for $100. I went to have it installed and the dealer says that the axel diameter is too small for posi unit. SLP is closed until Jan 2 and I'm up the creek right now. Has anybody installed this take-off unit before and if so did you have to change axles. I have a 1989 Camaro RS which originially came with the 3.08 open rear.

That means you have 26 spline axles, and the SLP posi is for 28 spline axles. You need to get 28 spline axles for a 90-92 f-body. Or you can get aftermarket 28 spline axles from a place like Moser.

89 was supposedly the first year of the 28-spline axles. I always tell people with that year to look before they assume anything, because a fair number of 26-spline axle rears obviously still existed, in the non-performance ratios especially, and definitely found their way into cars until the supply ws exhausted.

Did the dealer acually take it apart and look, or are they just feeding you the automatic "we don't feel like working on your ancient greasy dirty POS" line they always give people with 10-year-old cars? I hate it when people do that to me, there is nothing (well, almost nothing) more insulting than standing in front of somebody with an open wallet and being told my money isn't green enough for them.

Thanks Kev, you are right and after I mentioned that to them they confirmed it. So I'm looking at aftermarket axles since the GM ones are about $270 a piece!

I called Strange today and they don't make axles for 7.5" GM 10-bolts. Do you know if Moser does, and if so how much they are and who carries Moser products?

RB83: No, they actually had the posi installed before they realized it and they have been more than satisfactory in dealing with me.

Any help on where to buy some aftermarket 28 spline axles would be greatly appreciated, as state above Strange doesn't make them, Auburn does for $300 and 10-12 days wait, and Moser was closed today so I have to call them tomorrow.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Jason

Drivetrain Direct carries them. The tech article on rebuilding the rear end:
https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/t...nguprear.shtml

has their part number and phone number listed, although they're only $250 for the pair of them. They can install new wheel studs too (for around $20-30 IIRC) so that all the dealer has to do is slide the new axles in. I bought them to go with my HD Torsen diff and 3.42 gears.

I have a question about the 26 to 28 spline "upgrade" in order to be able to use the zexel Torsen Posi.

My car is rear drum, are there any 28 Spline axles Made For Drum ? this seems Like it could be a potential problem. Or am I totally oFf base ?

Im Looking More for junkyard axles as opposed to after market becasue this car Is never going to see lower than 13's.

any Info is appriciated.

The axleshafts are the same for disc and drum cars. The axle housings are different however, but if you get 28-spline axleshafts, they'll fit either type of brakes.
