Temporary axle

I found a salvage yard with a pile of complete axles from 90-92 camaros. They will not let me open them up. Is there a way to tell if they are LS. Do all diff with disk brakes come with LS?

Re: Temporary axle

Turn the yoke by hand. If both axles spin the same direction it's limited slip. If they spin opposite each other it's open differential.

You can also use the same method to determine the gear ratio by rotating the yoke one revolution and counting how many times an axle rotates. For example, 1 yoke turn and 3-1/2 axle spins would be ~3.42 ratio.

Re: Temporary axle

Well could not find exacticlly what i was looking for but I bought a GU6 axle assy out of a 89 camaro that was a front end total for $175. The car had 20,000 miles on it. The car was still complete. It really doesn't matter but does anyone know if it may be a LS?

Re: Temporary axle

There should be a tag on the cover that says to use limited slip differential fluid only. If the tag is not there then it probably isn't. Turning the axles is not a reliable method of checking it. I have bought several rear ends that would turn both axles in the same direction, only to find that one had a bent axle tube, one had a bad shaft in the differential, and others with some sort of problem. The only way to be sure is to remove the cover and see what is in it.

Re: Temporary axle

I would never buy a used differential if I couldn't open it up and look inside it first.

False. Not alll limited slips will do this, for example, the diff the used in some 4th gens, used a McCleason style lsd also called a thorsen, or zexel.
If you where to test it to see if it was a open diff, it would act just like a open diff. Its needs some torque and some traction to work. This type of diff is great for autocross, because its less likly to push in the turns, also it is very good for street use because lock up during turns

Re: Temporary axle

I got it home and opened it up. It was an open diff 26 spline with Richmond gears that are in very good shape. I want to run this car on the steet once in a while. I figured I would just order a mini spool for it. If I install one how bad will it eat up tires if you take your time around corners? Does anyone else do this, do street and stip with a mini spool?
