3.42 with my 700r4 best combo?

From what I've been able to find it seems like the best gear set to go with would be 3.42 for a car with an automatic transmission and a 305/350, even if modded a bit, right?

3.73 is overkill?

My car is a daily driver (for now) and it stays on the streets. It will always be a street car and will likely never see the track but I do like to drive a bit fast.

Thats what I've gathered, is that correct? If anyone has anything else they would like to add or ask please do because I don't plan on doing this right away but it will happen.

I don't know about overkill. If you ordered the 86 L69 with the 700r4 automatic transmission, the stock rear end gears were 3.42, but the 3.73 gears were an option with that setup. So GM didn't think it was overkill.

Im happy with my 3.42's, doesnt seem to affect my mileage much, and takes off from a stop pretty good.

honestly, at this point I've been thinking about stepping up to 3.73's. the drop from first to second and the drop from 3rd to 4th just sucks. I feel that the step up would keep me in my powerband better.

Sounds pretty stock to me???? The heads and cam will change things entirely, I'd stick with 3.42's.

Re: 3.42 with my 700r4 best combo?

from what i have been reading a 700r4 with 3.23 gears is the same as a th350 with 3.92 gears(in first) so 3.42 would be prob be similar to 4.10's and 3.73 would be around 4.30s(just guesses dont feel like doing the math) ive been told first gear is like 3.10 first gear or something(if im wrong dont bash me this is just what i have been told)

Re: 3.42 with my 700r4 best combo?

I can say from experience. I just purchased a GU6 rear end to use temoprarily until I get my moser. I put it on the interstate last night and now I believe its been changed out to a 4.10. I am turning 2800 RPM @ around 70mph in OD and thats before the convertor locks up. I would STAY AWAy from 4.10's if you plan on driving it every day.
