5 speed swap

i recently had my car at a tranny shop and was told that i need a complete rebuild on my th700r4. im looking at 1500 to 2200 dollars. i figured that if im gonna spend that much money y not do a 5 speed. i found a used t5 on fbody motorsports http://www.fbodymotorsports.com/inc/sdetail/57803. i was told i was crazy to do this, so ccan anyone tell me wat to do. pros and cons. i know that it will cost more to do but im pretty sure i got someone lined up who would do it for me for some cash and a case of beer.

wat other parts will i need that arnt included in that tranny package

Re: 5 speed swap

Your pretty new to this site, so I'll help you with this link. https://www.thirdgen.org/manualswap

Most of us recommend doing a search before posting. Most of your questions will be answered that way. If you get stuck we will be more than happy to help you, but do some research on your own. The kit looks pretty complete, but no matter how complete you will have things that will be missing and you will have to go scrounge for them

Even if it was dollar for dollar............the exact same cost between auto and manual, you will be much happier with the T5. But I'd tear the trans down and check it out first before putting it in your car.

I just completed a T56 swap from a T5 and have about $2300 in it including the trans, putting all the good parts in it, new clutch, ect. I couldn't be happier. Depending on your future plans and funding available to you, you may want to consider stepping up to a t56 instead. The $2300 cost of mine was with all the good high quality and high end parts, with me doing all the work including the rebuild of the trans. You didn't mention what car you have, but if you go with a T56 and have a cable speedo, you need to include another $300 for either a cable x box to drive the speedo, or have the tail housing modified to accept a speedo cable. I can do tail housing the mod for you. PM me if you decide to go that way.

Here is a very good T56 thread on here if you decide to go that way. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ap-thread.html

Something else you need to consider before going the manual route is what rear gears go you have. Most autos have 2.73 gears. This will not be fun with either a T5 or T56. But rear ends in the junk yards are cheap. I can get one here for $100 and there are a number to chose from.

Edit: Read this thread, and especially the last post. This will tell you what another 3rd gen owner thinks about his decision to change to a T5 from an auto. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ing-crazy.html

Re: 5 speed swap

yes, it is, but its not worth the hassle, and i will cost more in the end.

How are you mechanical skills? If your going to pay someone to swap to a 5 speed it will be very expensive. If you have good mechanical skills, more than just being able to change oil and take a tire off, and do all the work yourself its not a bad deal.

Read the sticky posted above, its a good writeup and the parts list is good.

Also, VERY IMPORTANT, check out the vendors feedback fourm at the top of the fourms page and look up f body motor sports, they have a very bad reputation.

What are your plans with the car? if its a driver and staying stockish, the 5 speed makes driving the car much more fun, its one of the best things i ever did to my car, however, if you DD the car, a 5 speed in stop and go traffic can be a real PITA.

What are they doing as far as a rebuild of you auto? thats a lot of money for a stock rebuild. Maybe look at another shop.

If you plan on upgrading the power output of the car, or driving it real hard, you will have to think about a stronger trans ion the future. the t5 is not know for its strength. Stronger transmissions cost $$$$
