B&M TRICK SHIFT...IS IT...

...worth $3.99/quart? It has been two years since I did the tranny fluid, and that was when I put the B&M shift kit in. It hasnt been 30,000 miles but I want to do it cause I want my car to be happy. I see trick shift for sale at Discount Auto for $4 a qt. I am not sure I want to spend that much and find out it is a gimmick. Anyone aver use this stuff and if so is it worth it?

It is Type F fluid produced at a refinery local to B&M, with blue dye. Perfectly good stuff although nothing special. Just use Type F. It has more of the clutch friction modifiers in it; if you ever look inside a F*rd trans from the 50s or 60s, like a medium-case Cruise-O-Matic or something, you'll get a real kick out of the clutches. They're like half the total surface area if that compared to a GM trans. F*rd had to invent a special fluid to make their weenie little POSs survive. Back in the days before you could buy shift kits like you can now for absolutely anything, we used to call it "shift kit in a can"... of course that would be "in a plastic bottle" nowadays.

IMO, that's a lot to pay for something that isn't really any better than what it is replacing. Synthetic ATF, while even more per quart than the Trick Shift, gives even better friction modifying performance and increases the temperature that the fluid can withstand - while reducing the heat the tranny actually produces. AMSOIL ATF is both Dextron III and Type F rated.

If you really want to make your tranny happy, go the extra step and switch over to AMSOIL ATF.

According to Pro-built type-f trans fluid is made for asbestos type clutches. He does not recommend using this in place of dextron.

In defense of B&M Trick shift they do add modifiers that outperform both Dextron III & Type F.
Now does it outperform synthetics. Probably not, however synthetic ATF cost upwards of $5-6 bucks a quart.

I use a happy medium. Valvoline Durablend ATF.

I'm with ProBuilt. Dexron changed regularly is fine.

Hmmmm, if ProBuilt sees this perhaps he can verify, but I thought a month or so ago he recommended the AMSOIL synthetic ATF - or at least said it was the best you could get.

wal-mart dextron works fine for me. I've used the stuff for about 7 years. Anything synthetic is going to be better, but at a larger cost. If you want it to shift harder, put in a .500 boost valve(23.69 from summit and easy to install). A vette servo might help as well.

Hey Five7Kid go to the Apperance boards and look for the post concerning people from Denver, CO. We are trying to start a club for F-bodies in Colorado.
