Rear End Leaking fluid at backing plates for drum brakes
Rear End Leaking fluid at backing plates for drum brakes
I have a 1992 Camaro that is leaking What I thing is differential fluid onto the back wheel on the passenger side. Is there any way to check to see if I am right? If I am then what is the best way to fix this problem?
Thanks Jody

If its rear end grease than its probably an axle seal leaking. Check to make sure its not brake fluid because a leaking wheel cylinder will run down about like a bad axle seal.

If it's rear end grease, then it needs that seal. Usually if the seal is bad the bearing is too, and therefore the axle is as well since the axle itself is the inner race for the bearing.
You have to take out the axle to change the seal and/or the bearing.
Like the other post said, brake fkuid can also leak back there, so check to make sure it's one or the other.

If the axle is worn, don't toss it. You just need to get a repair bearing. It allows the bearing to ride on a different location on the axle. They also have the seal built in.

If it is rear end grease what color will it be. Will it be real black and very thick or will it be thin and almost colorless like brake fluid? Also if it is the seals where do I get the "repair bearings"?
Thanks Jody

Thick and black. You can get the repair bearing at a local auto parts store. Basically they just move the rollers back ~1/2" to an unworm portion of the axleshaft. Before you dive in make sure you have a slide hammer and the appropriate attachment to pull the bearing out.

It's called a " axle saver ". I install them about once a week. Your best bet would be to pull the drum first and see if the wheel cylinder is leaking from one of the rubber seals on each end. You will need a slide hammer/ w a bearing puller attachment and also something to drive the axle saver in. Be careful to stop when the bearing is seated, cause it wont seat like the old one. It will sit out farther, and if you whack it too many times, you'll bust the bearings out.
