9-bolt questions...

I've recently aquired a 9-bolt rear axle from an '86 F-Body. It has 3.27 gears, posi, and disc brakes... I am planning on putting this under my '84 Camaro Sport Coupe as soon as I get some wheels (I have the 14" steel wheels right now) that will clear the rear calipers.

Will the stock brake lines be OK to use with the disc brakes? My old axle (10-bolt) had drum brakes on it... I know I'll need a new proportioning valve, and possibly a larger master cylinder for the disc brake setup.

What kind of posi unit is in the 9-bolt axle?

Thanks...

well im not sure about your guestions there, but you might want to think twice about putting that 9 bolt in , you would be better off keeping ya 10 bolt and building that up, or going for a 4th rearend, i myself have a 89 firebird 350 with the 9 bolt and its just about ready to go out , on me only problem is you cant find any parts for them , it just depends on how much horsepower you plan on pushing , if ya plan on alot then you might think twice to save ya self more work down the future, just a opion, anyhow hope someone knows the answer to ya guestions

Reider racing has the parts for that rear end. I agree with Jeremy I have the 9 bolt as well and the only gear available is a 3:73 but if the limited slip goes out you have to get a new rear end. If a disc rear end is what you want they also made 10 bolt rears with disc brakes you just need to find one, parts are much cheaper and easily available to purchase.

Eh? I haven't had a problem looking around for parts for the 9-bolts... They cost more, but the 9-bolt is stronger than the 10-bolt, so the axle itself should last longer. Plus, I'm sticking with a V6, so I doubt I'll kill it with torque.

I already had a 4th gen 10-bolt, but sold it because I didn't want to deal with the mismatched backspacing it would cause, not to mention it was an axle with 2.73 gears.

The 3.70 gears as my only option is fine with me. I was never planning on going past the 3.70-3.73 gear ratio anyways.

Oh, well... Anyone else have any information or opinions on this?

Whoa whoa whoa... If the limited slip goes out I have to get a new rear end??? I just got this 9-bolt 3.45 with 60k miles on it, replaced my 3.42 10-bolt. Now I think the posi might be going. I dont want to hear that I have to replace the whole thing again!! Tell me I can rebuild it, or a place to get a new posi unit for it, please!

I think that we have used posi's at my work. Put one in mine when it went. Want a price, give me an email. Koby12@ureach.

9- bolts can be shimmed to compensate for limited slip wear, unlike the unit in the 10 bolt which MUST be replaced when it wears out. I have only had to service my rear end twice in 2 years of street driving and SOLO2/SOLO1 which is VERY hard on a limited slip. The 9-bolt holds up quite well. Parts can sometimes be tricky to find but the 9-bolt is a bit stronger than the 10 bolt. I have an article written on the procedure for shiming the 9-bolt posi unit - e-mail me and I can send it to ya.

Is it true that all 89's with rear disc brakes have the 9-bolt?

funny the 9 bolt was the hi performance option on camaro,s
parts are easily available in aus you guys just need to find someone to ship you the parts
rear end specialists and places like summit lie to you ...you can get hold of any ratio from 2.7 to 4.1 .....right gears and a set of moser axles are heaps cheaper than 9 inch rear ......and no fraud bits installed into a GM car !!!!

Dan... I did the exact same swap a few months ago. I replaced the brake line with a Russel braided steel line just to be sure that I didn't encounter proplems with the stock rubber line that came with the rear. I also rebuilt the calipers... I think the kit was $10/caliper from Autozone. Madmax may confirm this, the caliper design changed in 89 or so... maybe it was 87.

I have 17" rims, so I cannot say if they'll fit 14" rims or not.

I didn't change the master cylinder or anything, but I do have a proportioning valve sitting in my tool box. I drive every day without it and am not convinced it is truly unsafe. I will admit that I think that my front brakes are not doing all they could be doing, so I will install it in a few weeks after I move and stuff. There is a good article on this board about it.

I like my posi, but I think it needs to be re-shimmed to help it out a bit. I have heard that the 3.27 gear is optimal for the 700R4. I had a hell of a time hooking up the cable to the e-brake. And one of the caliper's bolts could only be inserted if I removed the bolt and lowered the LCA! They use the same pads p/n as the front calipers too.
