2 engine problems that are probably related?

My 86 iroc has two problems that are probably symptomatic of a larger, more costly problem.

First: when engine is cold, it falters and jumps when put in reverse.

Second: at higher rpms (between 15 and 20) when at a constant speed on the freeway, the engine stutters a bit. It's a slight raise and drop of only a few rpms, but I'm worried it might be caused by a much larger, very costly problem.

I would really appreciate any ideas at all.
Thanks.

Both sound like symptoms of a lean condition.

Is this a carb or FI car?
