How does a shift kit work?

??? I was considering putting in a 6-speed this summer basically to be a little different and have a little fun with the standard, but I know that an auto will save some time in a race. So what's the deal between the 6 and the auto with a shift kit? Opinions please.

Shift kits come in three basic forms.

1. Firmer shifts, and manual control over the shift points. First of all, you can have manual shifts in a stock tranny, but the shift kit alows more fluid to pass though the seperator plate. Second, this kit really shouldn't cost anything. It's one of those mods that you can do without buying anything. But if you don't know what you are doing, go ahead and buy.

2. Even firmer shifts. Basically letting more pressure pass through the seperator plate. And also, new check ***** and different rate springs for the govener, which makes the shift points later or earlier.

3. Full race. Full manual controls over the shifting. With the others, you can still put the car in third,(drive) and go from stop to fifty, and the tranny will shift automatically. Or if you leave it in second, it will start out in first, then shift into second automatically. But with the full race, every time you come to a stop, you have to down shift. Basically a manual tranny, but with no clutch.

Get a 6 speed! Closeer ratios keep your power right where you want it, plus it is unique and FUN!!!!!

With out a doubt, get a manual. Wether it be a four, five, or six speed. But if you got the dough, get the six.

6-speeds are too much shifting go for a 5 or 4.

yea it is a lot of shifting but since the ratios are so close you can shift from 3-5 or 4-6 or whatever. Just use them all when you race

DAMN!!!! You guys twisted my rubber arm. I had almost completely decided to save some cash and stick with my auto, but I see I now have no choice. I think I've got a buyer for my tranny already, although I'm not sure what to charge him for it. Any guesses on how much I'll end up spending on this project?

The only difference with 6 speeds compared to 5 speeds, (as far as shifting goes) is the 6th gear is more of an over drive. In both 5 and 6 speeds, the fourth gear is 1:1 and the fifth speed is an overdrive. The sixth gear, is more of an overdrive. Where 5 is .75:1, 6 is .63:1.
