No, you'll have to get a kit from someplace to lock up the convertor. I think it's a B&M type kit. Search the board and you'll find plenty of references to it.

Without the TPI hooked to you computer, your SES light will be on and the computer will be in "limp home" mode and not lock the converter. B&M, TCI, Painless wiring, etc... make kits to lock-up the converter. Or you can make a manual switch. Or both.

the converter locks when you supply 12-volts to the purple/black wire going into the transmission.

Maybe on the early 700's with the Type 1 lockup harness inside. On later ones the converter locks when the tan and black wire is grounded. +12v is always present on the purple wire except when the brake pedal is depressed.

i have an 83 camaro that had cross fire injection and a 700R-4. when i removed the tranny i don't remember there being any wires to the tranny does this mean it was disconnected by previous owner or my car didn't have it?

Some early models had lockup built in. You can drop your pan and wire the 4th gear pressure sender to one side of the lockup valve, then wire the other side to the case. Then all you need to do is apply +12v on this wire (IGN fused) and it will always lock up in 4th which is usually not a problem behind a v8. Just check your lockup solnoid and make sure it is a two terminal type. Early ones are 1 terminal. They are interchangable though and could easily be changed without dropping more than the pan and filter.
Check this link:

It has many ideas on locking up without a kit. Hope it helps.
