Rear End Identification

Evening Guys,
The car is going into Winter storage tomorrow, and being the car guy I am, I'm already planning work for next spring.

I was wondering if one of you more knowing would be able to identify what rear end my car has simply by looking at a picture of it? Or would be there an RPO or something that would explain what rear is it? I know it's got drums (Thats part of the root of my question..), so I don't know if that narrows it down any or not. The guy I bought it from told me it had 4.1's in the rear, but Its my understanding thats not a stock Camaro option, so I'm not sure.

If someone could identify it by picture, I'll grab a picture tomorrow before the car goes away. If ident via picture wouldn't work, can someone suggest another method?

Re: Rear End Identification

The best way to really tell what gears you have is to pop the cover and count the teeth on the gears. You'll also be able to tell if you have a posi or not this way.

Re: Rear End Identification

I'll probably end up doing that in the spring, especially if I end up doing brakes, which I'd like to. I have a Speedo issue that i'm thinking might be trans related, so it might be spending some time on the hoist come spring.

What i really needed to know, and perhaps I should have made that a little clearer, is the make/model/style/etc of the rear end. For example, is a Borg 9-bolt, Strange 10-bolt, etc.

Re: Rear End Identification

Just by it having drums, I can already tell you it is a 10-bolt. 9-bolts only got discs.

But, just look at the rear end cover.....
9 bolt heads=9-bolt rear
10 bolt heads=10 bolt rear. It really is as simple as that.

As for your gear ratio....Jack the car up, spin a tire by hand & count the rotations of the pinion vs 1 rotation of the tire. That'll give your gear ratio, pretty close. Close enough that you can figure it out, by knowing 9 vs 10 bolt. And of course, that'll also tell you posi vs open. With an open, both sides will generally spin, but the drivers side can be EASILY stopped on an open rear.

Re: Rear End Identification

Alright, so we've determined it was a 10-bolt. I suppose I could have laid under the car and counted them, but...ya know...whatever. haha.

Anywho...was there only one manufacturer of 10-bolts for the Camaro? Again, one of the sole reasons i'm asking is for brakes...one of the brake companies I deal with has 'kits' available to put aftermarket brakes on a normally-drummed rear end...I'm trying to figure which kit I might use/could use, thus, I need to know bolt count and manufacturer. I'm going to post a question about said brake kit on the brake board in a while, to get opinions on it specifically.

Thanks for the help so far, guys!

Re: Rear End Identification

All you need do is tell the brake manufacturer you have a GM 10-bolt of a certain year--or simply the situation even further by checking out Ed Miller's site. Ed will guide you through whatever kit you wish:

Re: Rear End Identification

Although there was only one GM 10 bolt produced during the third gen years, there are actually 3 different GM 10 bolts. The older 8.5" was the best. There was a short lived 8.2". Third gens and just about every other GM RWD car from that era got a 7.5/7.625 10 bolt.

I say it as a GM 10 bolt, also known as a corporate 10 bolt, because there was an over the counter option for a Dana 44 for the third gen. It also has 10 bolts on the cover.

Probably sufficient info for 91RS.
