My 700R4 shifts to 4th too early-WTF??

Many have posted about the 4 to 3 downshift at WOT-I have the opposite problem and it's pissing me off!! If i'm going about 30-35 it stays in 4th, no lockup. As soon as I start into the throttle again, WHUMP, i'm in 4th lockup and lugging & chugging until I go about 3/4 throttle. Then it slams back into 2nd and hauls *** . Is this something that can be corrected on the ECM, or should I just put in a switch to kill lockup when i'm at this speed? I know 4th needs lockup after about 45-50mph, but I hate it when it comes in this early. I should have gotten a manual.

There is a spring in the valve body for the 3-4 sequence valve. Possibly swapping in a heavier spring will raise the shift point for 4th. They usually go into 4th at 35 to 40 mph anyway. I'm not sure what spring to put in there, nor do I know where to get one.

Maybe someone who knows about modding them can hook you up, because trial & error on dropping the valve body isn't much fun.

I will post you a pick of the location of the valve if you want.

It doesn't sound abnormal though (at light throttle anyway) for a 4th shift at 35 but it could be changed.

Well, what seems to happen the most is that the lockup comes in at these low speeds and really bogs things down-I don't mind 4th gear at about 35mph, but then it locks up and really lugs the engine, and it don't wanna UN-lock until I stand on it; not fun in city traffic which I often encounter. I know I could put in a switch and manually operate the TCC, but will I harm my tranny doing this? I just don't want that friggin lockup until about 45-50 mph, that's all.

Yep, a switch would be ok... Just make sure you don't leave it off for long highway drives... An external cooler would be a good idea. I heard of overheating running 4th unlocked for long periods of time but a good cooler should do the trick. A custom prom can be made to raise the lockup point also, or using a vacuum switch will raise it depending on engine load. You can jury rig a vacuum guage to your windshield and find the right vacuum point you want lockup to occur, then wire it into the tan or the red (but not both) wire on the trans harness.

Just some ideas. I wired mine to lockup all the time in 4th. With 4.10's and a ZZ4 there's really no bog (even up a pikes peak type hill) but my v6 has the problem you mentioned. And instead of unlocking the tcc while bogging it kicks down into 2nd! I think it's wasting more fuel and defeating the whole purpose so i resort to driving in 3rd gear unless on the level.

THANK YOU Joel, I was hoping to get this answer. I would only leave it unlocked while driving in the stop-n-go clusterf*ck traffic that we get around here, you know how that goes. Never gets much above 45mph. I already have a tranny cooler, mounted it front 'n center of the condenser, and it really did make a difference in the shifting, nice & firm the way the kit is supposed to make it.
I thought there were no bins to make a custom prom for a compucarb ECM? Or did I miss something?

UPDATE/EDIT:Switch did the trick, it helps with kickdown, too.

In bad traffic, it is a good idea just to drive in 3rd...makes for a lot smoother drive.

Did you try adjusting your TV cable. Just a few clicks out of adjustment played havok with my trans.

A switch may only prolong the inevitable.

Yeah, adjusted the TV cable a couple of times, it's right where it's supposed to be. I took the car to my tranny mechanic, he says it's just fine, it was rebuilt about a year ago with all the cool performance goodies (shift kit, vette servo, etc) I've resorted to driving in 3rd before, but that's a real pain in the *** with the weird stop-go-punchit-stand-on-brake traffic here in Otown. I didn't like how it kept on feeling like it was constantly "pulling". Ah hell, I've solved my problem, thanks everyone. If I burn up my 700R4 then GOOD RIDDANCE, hello t-56.
