Alternative tras

Hello all-hope I'm in the right board-I own a 1984 z-28 which came with a 305ho-and a t-5 manuel transmission(5 sd).Being unempressed with the power I replaced the engine with a 383 stroker+-350-400hp,missed a gear last summer and hence blew out the trans. Is there a cost effective alternativ e to the weak t-5?One can go to Jegs but the cost is prohibative-2-3k.Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks

If you don't mind loosing a gear you could locate a Muncie 4 speed somewhere. Should be a few in Salvage yards. Otherwise you go to a Turbo 350/400 or get a beefed up TCI or B&M 700 r4 auto. Seeing as you are used to a manual, the Muncie 4 speed would probably be your best bet.

I propose you spend $700 for a new Tremec 3650 out of a new Mustang, get an adapter plate made, and go that route.
That trans will hold 460 rwtq with slicks, and you get to have an overdrive.
