'85 IROC 700R4 "jerks"

When I put it in gear it "jerks" hard, the engine stubbles, then it as the engine recovers the back wheels will spin sometimes.

It doesn't do it as bad in reverse, and is even normal going into reverse sometimes.

I've adjusted the T/V cable it did nothing to change it.

Is it tranny time? If so I might use this one the rest of the way up and put in a T5 or T56. Probably T-5 because of budget.

Is your idle too high?

Early 700's are pretty well-known for this, later ones had an accumulator to soften the initial shift into gear. If your tires are slipping, your rear brakes probably need adjusting too.

I put new brakes on it last summer after I got it, it isn't the brakes. It has done this since I got it, haven't drove it much. Before I put the new rear brakes on, it would spin on pavement, now just grass and gravel.

One thing about the brakes though, they were factory rear disc, I found that in the RPO codes. Now they are Drum, were when I got the car. Maybe they didn't put in the right proportioning valve or something. I still don't think that would cause this though. This is a hard jerk.

And the idle is a little high but that shouldn't make it do this. I can put my Formula in gear in morning high idle at like 1500rpm, it goes into gear nice and easy.

Your 89 will probably have the 87 1/2 and later 700R4 with the accumulator in the auxiliary valve body.

When you put it into drive push your brakes harder. If it still spins your rear wheels your brakes probably need adjusted. Remember my TA jerks really bad.

Even if my wheels don't spin, it "jerks" so bad that it makes a loud clunk.

Have you checked your tranny mount? It may seem obvious, but the obvious is often overlooked If the mount is bad, it will cause a "clunk" when you put it in gear, and will make the car jerk. I've never personally seen one that caused the tires to chirp though, but hey, anything's possible, right? Let us know...

I looked at it last summer. It looked alright.

Oh one more thing. When I drove it, the transmission seem to get hot, I could feel it on the floor around the console.

I thought last summer you said that two crossmember bolts were loose and one other was stripped and you thought you had fixed it. Maybe they have come loose again

I thought that might be it. So about a week ago I put a jack under the crossmember and put some pressure on it so it couldn't drop if the bolts have come loose again. It still jerked.
