Posi not working?

ok...so i have a posi-trac rear. I kno it works somewhat because if i spin one tire when the car is raised...both wheels spin in the same direction...ne way. I think when i did a mini burn out the other day that only one wheel spun. Am i missing something? this might be a dumb question but i know little about limited slip differentials. If anyone can help id appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Posi not working?

What type of rear do you have. You list 3.70 gears so im guessing 9 bolt BW? If it is posi it could be just worn out or on its way out.

There could be many things going on here. Without knowing exactly what you have it's going to be hard to tell you what is wrong. We need to know which rear end you have and what differential is in it. Without knowing this the best we can do is guess.

Re: Posi not working?

Alright well its definetly the factory rear. I have the performace axel option. G92 or whatever it is. I definetly had a working posi. then i had the rear rebuilt. He was recommended to me by MANY people. my trusted MECH told me that i would be foolish not to have this person rebuilt it. So after he did. He told me everthing was fine. but it didnt seem to hook right. so i jacked up the rear end and spun the wheel to make sure i wasnt nuts. Both turned in the same direction. I dunno. I guess im just lazy to go have someone else check it and see what is going on.

Re: Posi not working?

Is it the 10 bolt or the Borg Warner 9 bolt? If it's the 10 bolt it probalby has an Auburn posi, which is crap when it gets worn. You might as well toss it in the scrap metal pile and get an Eaton or Truetrac. The posi code is G80. The 3.73 code is GT4. See if this is what you have.

Re: Posi not working?

There were no 9 bolts in 91.

Have you tried talking to the rebuilder about it?

true true! BUT just like me i put a 9 bolt posi in my 91 so whos to say someone did the same in his?

change the rear end gear oil and when you put fresh oil in there make sure you put in the special additive for the posi.

if you want to know if you have a posi. YOU spin one tire when its off the ground and if the other one spins in the same direction and another person grabs the other wheel and keeps spinning its a POSI.

if he grabs it and its stops its an open diff.

That doesn't always work. The only way to know for sure is to take the cover off and look. The G92 suggests that it was posi, though.

Seriously...before i had the rear checked ...(just because I didnt know the last time the oil was changed and i wanted to know what condition everything was in) ... if i did a burn out both would spin. now im not so sure that both spin ALL the time. I dnt usually burn out... but when i did last... i really dnt think both spun. Pisses me off

Re: Posi not working?

i dont get it though.....you dont think? all you gotta do is get out walk back behind the car and see the rubber on the pavement. two streaks = POSI one streak = no posi or a ****ed up posi.
