Transmission or clutch problem?
Alright guys I think I am having a trans or clutch problem in my 1992 RS 305 TBI 5 speed camaro. I was hoping you guys would be able to point me in the right direction of where to look or go to first. So heres the problem: Either from a dead stop or while rolling if I get on my car the RPM's rev real high before the car will get up and go. This only happens sometimes and if I drive the car normal just out driving around town its fine. This only happens when I get on it a little, so is it my trans starting to go? Or is the clutch not engaging or letting go or what? Any help is apprieciated since I was getting ready to send this car to paint but now I want to make sure its mechanically sound before I do that. Also this is kinda a newbie question but I am a newbie I was wondering what kind of trans was in my car, it is a 5 speed...
Thanks,
Darren

clutch and pressure plate. Sounds like the clutch is slipping.

Re: Transmission or clutch problem?
if it was an automatic trans, it could be the trans going bad, or the torque converter.
since its a manual its a bit different. The t5 is just a gear box, the gears dont slip inside of it, they either work, or they break, and if they are broken , the gear or trans wont work at all.
Changing the clutch is just a matter of unbolting things and rebolting them. Problem is, some of those things are big and heavy. the hardest part is getting the trans out. If you have a lift and proper tools, its not a big deal, but if you are doing it on the garage floor with the car on jackstands, prepare for a tremendous upper body workout.
Its all come down to you mechanical ability and what tools and facilities you have at your disposal.
If you dont want the hassle, take it to a reputable shop and have them do it for you.

Slipping clutch problem and it is not going to heal itself. Easy driving lets the clutch engage without to much slipping. It is only a matter of time.

Yes I know but when the car is your DD and you are a broke college student that works hard and still lives check to check sometimes a little easy driving until you get paid is what you gotta do.

Since your car is basically stock, you'd be just fine using the Ram Premium replacement clutch. The Ram Premium series is equivalent to the OEM clutch, but far better quality than the original. It's about $140 and should be more than adequate for your needs. Here's a link on where to buy one. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku P.S. Make sure the shop resurfaces your flywheel when they put the new clutch in.

Good deal man! It sounds like you picked a good, reputable shop to do the work for you. It's good that they fixed all the leaky seals too. Sometimes that can saturate the clutch disc and cause it to start slipping too, especially if the seal inside the bearing retainer, or the engine rear main seal are leaking.
