How do I Remove Carrier-Pinion Bearings?

How do I Remove Carrier-Pinion Bearings?

So I am rebuilding a gm 10 bolt and I have the whole thing out of the car with the carrier/pinion/ and axles out of the housing.

My question now is how do I remove the carrier bearings and pinion bearings?
I have access to many tools at school including presses/pullers/ etc. but I don't know what to do.

My teacher showed me a tool that looked like to round wedges that go around the race and it looks like there are bolt holes to attach a puller but I'm not sure if its right.

My next option is to bring it to a machine shop but I think it would be a good experience and it would save money.

This is the best puller that I have found for removing the bearings from the differential. There are not many around, so you might not be able to use one. If not then one easy way to get them off is to cut the cage off of the bearing and remove all of the rollers. Then use a MIG and run a hot pass around the inner race. This will loosen it enough so that other pullers will work. Be sure to remove all weld splatter before assembling the rear end again. Just don't try to cut the bearings off. This usually results in notches in the bearing journals that will make the case weak.

You need one of these and a press to remove the pinion bearing.

Thanks for the quick response. I have the second tool you showed and a press so the pinion will be easy I assume. Is there any reason i couldnt use the same tool on the carrier and have the carrier suspended under the press and have the second tool between the carrier and bearing?

That will work if there is enough room to get the diff in the table. There isn't enough room between the sides of my table to let the diff go between them, so I had to get the other tool.
