Had 3 TCI trannys...now have new GM tranny but it might have a problem...please help

Hi,
I just had a replacement 700R4 tranny, that I bought off GM, installed into my 88 Iroc. The work was done at a local shop, not GM. I recently went through 3 TCI trannys in 6 months, not because I was abusing them but because they were just junk. Every one of them had some weird vibration, either the output shaft (speed related) or input shaft (RPM related). Anyway I got my money back and bought the GM because of the 3 yr/ 50,000 mile warranty. The tranny has now been in my car for about 3 weeks. The 2-3 shift seems to have changed recently and I would like some thoughts on it. Under hard throttle, when it shifts out of 2nd, it will hesitate a little before it engages into 3rd. You can hear it shift out of 2nd and then over a second later you hear it grab into 3rd. Once you hear it grab, its great, the car pulls hard. Are the clutches worn or is it some kind of other internal problem? You can't notice any of this at regular throttle though. Everything seems normal. But it wasn't like this before so something has definitely changed. It seem like something is delaying the shift rather than just slippage. My original tranny slipped and the engine would increase in RPM without the car pulling hard. This new problem seems different in that once you hear it grab it grabs, no slipping. Its just delayed. All comments are greatly appreciated.
thanks

I was having a similar problem, but I think that someone told me that it was the servo. The seals were allowing fluid to pass by. Or something like that. But I have had no problems with my TCI. I think they are great.

On a lot of the remans they left a hole out of the valve body plate that needs to be put back. If it is missing, then in a short time the 3-4 clutches along with the 2-4 band will go away. I can e-mail you the picture of where the hole needs to be along with some modifications that you could do while it is apart if you desire.
Hope This Helps!!!

Thanks for the info! But to tell you the truth if thats the case then I'll just let the tranny fail. Its only a couple of weeks old and has a 3 yr, 50,000 mile warranty. I'm afraid that if I start tinkering with it GM will void the warranty. I think I'll bring it in to a dealer and show them just to cover myself. If they were smart they would fix it now and not wait for it to fail completely. Let me just say though that this problem is not nearly as bad at the problems I had with TCI trannys. Those things are complete junk. They only come with a 6 month warranty and within a 1 year period they will rebuild it for $250. Thats a horrible warranty comparted to GM. Don't get me wrong... I liked the firm shifts, etc. but the quality control at that place is horrible. PS.. Those trannys shifted so hard I actually broke my rear gears! Too much for a daily driver though.

I tried a TCI tranny once, and I agree 100% with you that is was complete junk. It never shifted right from day one, and mine also had a terrible vibration at all speeds.

You could address rhe problem & GM would never know, because they do not work on them at the dealerships anymore they just remove the trans & install another one. Just hope that the next one does not have the same problem.
Glad Too Help!!!

That is so not true! I rebuild tons of 4L60, 4L60-E, 4T60-E, 4T65-E, and occasionally a 4L80-E. GM warranty, and extended warranty companies make me do a "price comparison". If its cheaper to overhaul (many times it is), then thats what I have to do. Plus it pays better than just R&R.

If the tranny tried to pass a Torrington bearing through one of the planetaries, forget it, time for a Reman, but if its something stupid like a Reaction Shell, its some of the easiest 15 hrs you can turn. Not to mention, our dealership stocks most of the "common" stuff, like seal kits, reaction shells, selective thrust washers, etc... so there is usually a quicker turnaround when we overhaul. We also have ALL the special tools to do so.

GMTech, I am only going by what I am told. In some of the dealers that I have dealt with (the service managers), they have told me this. Thay do not even bother with their time trying to solve problems, just do an R & R. This must be that each dealer decides for themselves on what to do on each problem. I am not trying to mislead anyone about this, just trying to help. If I have I apologize.

Hey, no prob. I can see why some dealers do that. Dealers cannot turn warranty work away, they have an obligation, and if they don't have any decent trans techs, they either sublet it out, or just replace it. The dealership I work at now used to R&R, and send the trans down the street to Coastal Trans before myself and the other trans tech started working there.
