lock up tranny
im going from tbi to carbed and do i need to lock my tranny up so it doesnt burn up or how should i do this. i was told i could put a switch in there but it would be a hassle to keep flipping the switch.
Re: lock up tranny
More information please. What are you starting with? If your not using the feed back system used on OE carbed cars then ypu will need to control the TCC some how if you want the benifit of better milage.
If you leave it unlocked you proabably wont over heat the trans since it wont lock up a WOT anyway or under high load. But if you install a high stall converter it's possible to generate enough heat to dammage the trans though it's unlikely.
Just wire up the swotch and dont wory about using it unless your cruising long distance. Milage around town will suffer a little but not much.

ok cool its a 700r4 but should i flip the switch when i take it to the track though right or does it not matter.im going from a 305tbi to a 350carb but i will be using the feed back or drop down cable to the tranny to the carb. also im not installing a stall converter neither yet that like the last thing i do lol for now after this motor is is.
Re: lock up tranny
You only use lockup during cruise / low load situations. If you leave it on any other time when you are accelerating or stopped you will burn up the TC clutch in a matter of minutes.
The TCC locks the converter together in a solid piece using an internal clutch. And just like a clutch on a manual trans it needs to be reloesed when you stop, but since it's a very thin clutch and has little surface area having it on and exposing it to load will cause it to slip and burn up.
The cable you reffer to is the TV cable and is different than a kick down cable. A kick down cable simply forces the trans to drop from 3rd to 2nd when you accelerate hard in older 3 speed cars.
A TV cable regulates the pressure aplied to the clutches depending on throttle position and als affecst shift tomong. Higher throttle angles cause the line pressure to rise for more holding power and firmer later shifts.
