replacement for 700r4?
hey i've got a 92 z28 5.7 w/. a 700r4 debating putting in a turbo 400 after it has been recommended by my uncle who put one on his 67 camaro ss. I of course am debating the pros and cons since this is a street/daily driver and not much for a strict drag car obviously. any good replacements for the 700R4 that are automatic? Or anyone know where to order or get a turbo 400 in vegas?

whats wrong with your 700r4? they can be rebuilt to handle as much power as you can through at it. plus you still have overdrive.

Re: replacement for 700r4?
i had it suggested to me that a turbo 400 it way better than the stock 700r4 and since i wouldnt need the overdrive in the southwest I won't miss it. I was also told that since I'm debating putting a 427 small block or something else besides my L98 that a turbo 400 would work better with almost anything i could put in it. I'm looking for something that can handle daily driving but also give me the power I need if I want to go to the drag strip on friday nights, or beat someone at short runs without worrying about anything. I need durability, rocket acceleration, and longevity. As far as maintaining it goes I'm the type to clean things out every month or so

Re: replacement for 700r4?
the long th350(9") is the correct swap for a 700r4. It is the same length and uses the same driveline. The th350 with small upgrades-shift kit, heavy duty center support, and basic rebuild kit will easily handle the power. Not to mention the torque converters are cheaper by a lot for a stall converter. The th400 is the norm for big blocks mostly. I use my th350 over 500 horse supercharged for over 9 years, service it hardly ever, but was built by me properly to begin with. Th400's aren't as sensetive during the rebuild as I've seen stock ones with a shift kit shock me with their longevity. They don't use square seals in the back of the case which can become brittle like the th350, the th400 uses a band back there.
YOU WILL HATE NOT HAVING A OVERDRIVE!!!!!!!!! Once used to it it's hard to go back.

Re: replacement for 700r4?
Thanks. I am a little new to tranny swaps and I keep hearing stick with the 700R4 or upgrade to 700R4cl? I think not sure what the proper name is but anyways my uncle who's gotten 585hp w/. 600ft lbs of torque with his 67ss suggested to move to a turbo 400 since it's the strongest out there and can handle anything i'd want to drop in and later I am not sticking with the stock 5.7L L98 I'm thinking of an Ls6 or something further on down the road, but I still need someresearch. I've heard the 350s start grinding really bad around 75k miles is this true?

well unless you do the mod to the tranny you wont be able to go hard in overdrive.

Re: replacement for 700r4?
You could keep the 700r4 with the LS engine swap also. All you have to do is use a special flexplate. no mods to the trans would even need done!
What came behind the LS? A 700r4 style trans-the 4l60e.
I did a conversion this last summer in a 67 camaro with a 454 and th400. The ls swap went easy, and the 700r4 works great behind it. It sounds cool also. The nicest thing about the swap was the car went from about 4mpg to approx. 20mpg. rediculous.
