Have '92 anniversary w/305, what do i need to install gears and posi, 3:73 or 4:10??

Everyone keeps telling me it will cost a total of a grand labor and parts included. What do i need? I have an auto and was told not to go higher than 3:73 because the car is daily driver. I know that in a mustang the best gear for an auto is 4:10's. Do i have to know if i have a 2 or 3 series carrier cause i am changing everything? Does anyone know how many spline axles i have? Thanks

You have to find out what you have for a rear. is it a 10-bolt or a 9-bolt? if it is a 10-bolt find out what the current gear ratio is then that will tell you what series carrier it is. if it is below 3.08 then it is a two-series carrier if it is 3.08 and numerically higher than 3.08 you have a 3-series carrier. check the tech data sectio of this board to see what your car came with standard and what it could have with an option. That is all you need to know if it is stock.

It doesn't matter what carrier you have now if you are switching to posi(it replaces the carrier). You should have 28 spline axles. It will probably be cheaper if you buy all the parts and bring them to the shop. For the money, the 99 dollar torsen, 3 series carrier richmond 3.73's(around 180) and a full bearing set(around 100).

Yeah, the rear is bone stock from the factory and i believe that this year w/ an auto has the 2:73 rear end. What is the difference between a 2 series carrier and a 3 series one?

FYI. SLP has O.E.M. Take-off Torsens for $75. I'm sure they can set you up with some 3.73 gears. www.slponline.com

The difference in carriers is what gears will work on them. As you increase gear ratio, the pinion becomes smaller, so the carrier is made slightly larger.
