Axle Shaft Questions????

Well, I finally pulled my rear end apart to check to see if my 89 had the 26 or 28 spline axles. Of course, after I buy everything, they are the 26 spline ones.

I did some searching on the boards and have some good places to buy new axles that will be a direct fit.

My question is....did all 90-92 F body cars (Firebird, Camaro, V6 & V8) come with the 28 spline axles? I figured I would check the junkyars tomorrow (day off) and try my luck at saving some $. Any help would be VERY appreciated!

Thanks!

Today I found the only 90+ 3rd gen at the salvage yard. It was slammed to the ground wih no wheels. I spent about an hour with a couple sizzor jacks from nearby cars to get it up high enough to work under.

20 minutes later I walk out with my new 28 spline axles for......20 bucks!! You cant beat that deal no how. The car was a V6 with drum brakes. I'm hoping everthing will bolt up to the ZT rear.

If you have disc brakes the rotors WILL NOT FIT on the axle ends. You need to have them turned down on a lathe.

Good lookin out! I have drum brakes myself so everything should be a piece of cake. The only question I had was about the c clips and you answered that. Thanks again!

Yeah. I went to score a rear w/ 28 spliners today and came up with an 89 with the v6 made in 6/89 on the door sticker. I'm like 'good chance they're 28 spliners'

So I popped the cover and the damn crosspin bolt snapped so I couldnt get the axles out so I took the whole rear (For $25!) and got it home and smashed the livin whiz out of the pin to get it out to find out they are 26. I needed the rear anyway and scored a fresh drum brake setup (Not rusty and the drums look fresh, w/ e-brake cables) and perrfect for my build 3.42 gears that look not wore at all (car was immaculate and 69,000 before the nasty front end collision)

So I'll have to go back and scour for more stuff anyway....

JoelO, what part of the axles need to be turned down to take disc brake rotors? How much should they take off? Thanks!

The flange on the outside doesn't fit inside the rotors. I'm not sure on the exact dimention, but you could always bring the rotor along and they could fit the axle to the rotor. It's about 3/16" all the way around. It brings the flange pretty close to the wheel stud holes.
