First timer of Transmission overhaul...(Thoughts)

Well, this is my first time to overhaul a transmission. I read a lot of articles, bought a ATSG service manual (real good detail) and started to work on it the first of this week (part-time) so far I have about 15 hours in the project. Hopefully I should have it togther sometime this weekend.

My hats off to you guys that do this all the time. Than to come to this board and help us amateurs out. Thanks...

Hey TomP, I bet you don't remember me, maybe so. I'm the one that had a 82 Firebird and took out the 2.8L and dropped the 3.4L in it.
Just courious if you remember or not. That was about 2 or so years ago....

You did that, too?
I love my swap!
Now, I need to service my current tranny behind the 3.4 (1995 with 42,000 miles onit, now), too. I was told/suggested to use Ford Type F fluid for usage after new Fram filter.

I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread
I'm rebuilding one, also.

Actually the 3.4L was from GM Performance Motor.
Take a look at my old car http://ken.lowrance.com/1982Firebird/1982_Firebird.htm

Than about a year later, I bought the Z28.

That can be seen at http://ken.lowrance.com

My swap looks just like a 1985 2.8, for smog testing purposes.
But, it runs like a 1995!
It is an incredible transformation.

Good luck, it's alot of fun rebuilding your tranny. Do it in a clean enviroment and someplace where you could lay out all the parts without loosing them. A garage isn't really a great place to do this because if it's like mine, there's crap all over to get mixed in/lost. I rebuild mine without using any special tools. I found meathods to do everything properly with stuff you already have laying around so if you get stuck just ask me. I have alot (300+) pictures of every part/operation I took during the overhaul. If you are going to change everything instead of a simple friction change... Here's some ideas:

Oil your frictions well (soak 'em)

A feeler guage not only works to set the friction clearence, but it makes a good seal installer.

To align the pump w/o the special tool, install it in the case upside down without the o-ring.
Dixie cups cut into strips make great seal protectors.

Always rebuild the pump with a kit, it's the lifeblood of the tranny.

dixie cups again to the rescue...

A 72 selective washer sets endplay down to .005" instead of the sloppy .035" GM puts in.

When your done you could take pride in saving alot of money and knowing for sure what quality parts are in it, instead of someone elses 'claims'

Changing the bushings, seals, adding in the vette servo, new torrington bearings, sprags, reverse input drum (usually worn), and other mods like a shift kit, shimming the acc's, drilling the seperator plate for more oil.... so many things could be improved over the stock stuff or what you could find in a 'basic rebuild' could be had.

http://www.hptransparts.com is where i bought everything (less the drum) These are the alto red eagle with nine 3-4 clutches and a wider powerband...

Check out http://www.transonline.com/electropu...site/index.cfm for more pics and hardcore mods to improve the 700r4.

Any fluid would work ok, just use whatever you got... It only takes a spash to lube the seals and frictions during the build.

About $400 for me. This includes all the wear parts and I also needed a new drum from GM ($45). This is for the Alto Red Eagle frictions, turbulator steels, Powerband, new roller clutch and sprag, seal kit, bushing kit, thrust washer kit including the torrintons, b-fix kit (GM), Corvette servo, 13 vane pump kit, I also needed a new seperator plate because the junk B&M kit has too big a hole in it (GM) and I needed some asst drill bits (1/16,7/64... Wal-Mart) and some mod parts like a new 3rd accumulator checkball capsule, and I added the Sonnax checkball capsule which allows you to dose the 3-4 clutches with alot of oil flow without effecting 2nd gear release (The orfice in this needs to be opened with the vette servo) This part was the hardest to find as it isn't a GM part. You need to call Sonnax to get the number of a dealer near you, then pay out the *** ($30) for this part.

Otherwise a good shift kit install would go sweet (I already had enough of my own parts to 'put' a kit together) the b-fix kit not only allows 4th gear WOT, but it includes a .500 tv boost valve. You could just shim the accumulators some or get heavier springs. I also threw a washer into the 3rd accumulator (In the servo) to firm it up a hair. Loctite is needed for a couple of the parts.... Maybe some hidden costs... Figure under $480 anyway...
