Do you have a shift kit? Are you manually shifting it? If you are than the range that it would shift is when the engine blows. If your letting the trans do all of the work I would also like to find the answer to that one. On my IROC if you floor it then it skips third and goes directly to 2nd gear, HMMMM 6000 rpm's on a 240000 mile 305, ain't good!! I have adjusted the detent cable but to no avail. Also if i'm racing from shifting from 2nd to third I have to back all the way off of it then it shifts, and sometimes if I stand on it again it goes directly back to 2nd gear AAAAAHHHHHHGGGG. WTF?!?!?!?!? I can't seem to fix it.

Iroc's are typically 5500 RPM WOT. The TV, as long as it is close, won't change WOT points. To be sure it is set right though: To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal floored, press the D button and pull the cable back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.
Sounds like you need to tune the governor. It needs heavier weights, I usually have the opposite problem, when I want higher shift points I lighten the weights, especially after swapping gears or tire sizes. If you have a few governors to play with or the B&M governor calibration kit you can get the shift points right where you want them.
Be sure the tv is set as leo mentioned.
