will a zf6 fit our cars?
I've got a lot of ideas going through my head for my wifes 91 RS. One I have been toying with but not very sure of is build an LT1 and put a ZF 6 behind it. I tried searching but can't seem to find anything. Has anyone tried this? If so how much power will it handle and what all is involved in doing it? This car is planned to be down for a complete rebuild of everything plus I have a couple small rust spots to take care of so I figure any fabbing is fine with me as long as it isn't completely insane. We are hoping for a car that looks like a bone stock RS. Any ideas on this would be great.

do a t56, the zf transmissions are less common, not as strong and require some very hard to find parts, like the bellhousing.

Just about everything related to the ZF trans is a custom job to fit into a 3rdgen.. It's only rated for 300lb-ft (slightly more than a WC-T5). They have special bellhousings, clutches, linkages, mounts, yokes, etc. Parts for them are expensive, it not impossible to get.
It can be done, but for the $ and efford, the paybacks are nil. Stick with a WC-T5 for under 300lb-ft, and a T56 for over 300lb-ft.
My $0.02

I remember a member back in the day that tried swapping a zf6 into his camaro. It was a light blue color and I think there was a Z in his screenname? Damn. I just remember seeing a picture of the interior missing and him cutting a hole for the shifter. I think this was back around '00 or so, well before t56 were common place.

I appreciate the comments everyone. Sounds like I'll be going with a T56 instead because we are looking at more than 300 hp. Viper spec T56 here I come.

I'm planning on dropping the weight down to around 3000 to 3100 lbs, pushing around 400 hp to the wheels with a few trips down the 1320 running slicks. Do you think just the regular LT1 T56 would handle that?

Definitely don't need a viper-spec for that. The lighter weight car and 400rwhp is well within the bounds of a stock T56. You may still want to do the normal upgrades (steel 3/4 fork, billet keys, bronze fork pads) to increase it's reliability, and check out the internals before installing it in your car.
