Rear ends

I have a 87 IROC with a 2:73 rear with drum brakes and POssi. The Possi is shot and also the left wheel brg. Now my questions.

1) Rebuild the 2:73 with a possible gear ratio change and still have the drum brakes.
2) Install a 2:77 rear with disc brakes with Possi from a 1989 IROC, which is available.
The rebuild is gone to be expensive and I still don't known if I can get the gear change on the present set-up? Or go with the 89 IROC rear with the disc brakes.
Finding a rear axle used or rebuilt is
next to impossible. Any suggestions?

Man when I hosed my rearend after taking a corner too fast, I just ripped it out. Could have rebuilt the thing, but I thought it would be eaiser to replace instead. Never rebuilt one, and dont think I would want to try. But the install is not exactly a piece of cake. I just loose fitted all the nuts and bolts and it went together pretty well. You better have some buddies that are willing to help you out too, not easy by yourself. And also, dont quote me, but I thought all IROCs came with Disc brakes in the rear, but not sure. At least my 86 came with them. I thought it was part of the IROC options. But to sum up, if you can find a deal on whole rearend, I'd do that.

As the orginal owner I can say all IROC's did not come with Disc brakes. And thanks for your input. Any more comments.

Unless the rear end is actually bent, I would just find some guy that works at a part store that likes doing it. Myself will do rearends for about 20 and hour and it will take 3-4 hours to put in a new set of gears, bearings, and then if you want goto a differnt posi/carrier.

I would rather have a 2.73 with no posi than a disk setup. The parts for the Borg Warner disk setup are twice the cost of the drums and only a handfull of companies make gears.

Worst thing I ever did was put in the disk setup... it has never worked properly and I replaced every single part.

The posi rear you buy might not have any better clutches in it than yours. I ripped out the guts of mine myself (EASY) and paid a mechanic that had experience $50 to set the gears (pinion depth and backlash). He also pressed my new bearings on the pinion and new posi carrier. I then put the axles back in and driveshaft.
