th350 tailshaft question

i know about the 6 and 9 inch and driveshafts that are to be used. What I'd like to know is can I simply bolt a 9 inch tailshaft on a trans that originally was a 6inch to get my driveshaft to work? if that won't work...will a driveshaft out of an 80's Monte/Cutlass/Malibu be close in length?
Thanx

As long as you use the longer output shaft too.

I would use what ever tail housing you have so you don't have to tear the trans apart to change the tailshaft then go to the junkyard and find a driveshaft of the right length. In my S-10/700R4 swap I ended up getting a driveshaft out of a ford ranger and front rear end yolks out of a '79 nova It all bolted right in. You might get lucky and find one that'll work for you.
The driveshaft out of the Monte carlos Etc are 54" measured with no yolk, overall length Not center to center. (I measured about every driveshaft in the yard ).

If your car had a 700-r4 and now has a
th350 with a 6" tailhousing, you will need a driveshaft for an early 3rd gen with 200C (metric). If you put a 9" housing on your
th350, the tranny would have to be torn down
to a nearly bare case and the 9" tailshaft
installed. I had a longer driveshaft shortened when I put a th350 w/6" housing in my '83Z. The machine shop labor was about $50.00 or so.

well I'm not changing the tailshaft. I know about the 200c's BUT good luck on find one up here. I have a bud at work (MIG master) that said he'd weld a new yoke on for me if I find a longer driveshaft. Only thing with this is I have to wait for him, plus i don't know how much out of balance it will be. That's why I'm still curious to know if say a malibu driveshaft would slide right in. Our GM junkyard is FULL of 80's cars, so I would'nt mind going this route if at all possible. Thanks for all the responses and i can't wait to get this sucker in! The 454 will really come alive now!

thanks for the reply's guys..I pulled my tranny tonight. I measured the driveshaft center to center (of u-joint cup) it's about 41.5 inches. I'll be hitting the junkyard tomorrow to try and find that buried treasure! There HAS to be somthing that will be damn close to 44.5 inches....just got to find it. Maybe a second gen Camaro? anymore ideas....let me know!

When I converted my old Monte to a 700, I tool the shaft to a driveshaft specialty shop and had the cut it and balbance it.

ok listen to me.ive been thru this ****..i know it sux....imagine having a badass fresh motor and then having to let it sit while you are figuring outhow the hell you are gonna change to a 350 turbo while retaining the torque arm and factory installed aluminum driveshaft...heheh
HERES WHAT I DID..: I FOUND A EARLY 70S LONG TAILSHAFT TRANNY...INPUT SHAFT TO OUTPUT SHAFT IS WITHIN 1/4 INCH...THEN I HAD A ALUMINUM SPACER MADE..IT WAS LIKE 1.75 INCHES THICK..I THINK..IT HAD THE FOUR TAILHOUSING BOLTS DRILLED..THEN....I BOLTED A 700 R4 TAILHOUSING TO THAT..WHICH PUT MY TORQUE ARM IN ITS STOCK LOCATIONS..AND IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY...THE MOUNT HOLES FOR THE TRANNY WERE MADE INTO THE SPACER AS WELL..(I WILL CRAWL UNDER THE CAR AND SEE IF ANYONE IS ACTUALLY FINDING THIS INFO HELPFUL..)AND TRY TO DRAW IT OUT WITH CAD.....I RETAINED STOCK LOCATION FOR EVERYTHING AND KEPT MY ALUMINUM SHAFT AS WELL..NOW.....VERY IMPORTANT....IF YOU DONT CARE ABOUT THE TORQUE ARM WHY NOT JUST USE A LONG TAILSHAFT 350 TURBO...I SWEAR MINE WAS ALMOST IDENTICAL IN LENGTH...THE TAILHOUSINGS ARENT....BUT OVERALL SHAFT END TO SHAFT END IS....HOPE I WAS OF SOME HELP TO YOU ALL...stevefirechickenz@hotmail.com

thanks for the info...but it's already taken care of. I managed to find a 3 speed driveshaft in the junkyard. I also ordered the B&M kit....everything is coming together nicely.....slowly. I drove the car for with the 700R4/454 for about4 months, then the torque convertor puked. That's why i"m swapping trannies. Plus the new one is rebuilt with heavy duty clutches, reworked valvebody, deep pan, 10" 3500 convertor, etc. etc. Should be a hell of a ride!
