2 ??s @ man. valve body + trans. shift to HIGH
Hey there guys....(and yes I did a search)
First question- I've seen two different answers in threads when I did a search, but non to specific.....Running a full manual valve body is bad on a street driven car?? And I've seen some post refering to a manual automatic...I clicked on a TCI link someone posted and it had a 'full pressure' kit....it said it runs a min. of 200psi line pressure all the time, but still preforms automatic functions, but also you can shift it manually. Would this kit be good for a street driven car (car goes to track a bunch, but weekend cruiser)..I was interested on how this kit operates.
Second question (And again did seach)
I found a bunch of threads about "my car shifts too low", but my car shift to high.....and yes my TV cable is adjusted correctly....is this something that one of those 'govenor calibration kits' could fix....I need to lower my shift by at least 500rpm if not more.
Also to tie both of the questions together.....if I purchase the TCI kit, I suspect that would fix the problem with the high shifts..I guess this would be a third question here.....The 700r4 shifts by pressure (correct??), if you were running at least 200psi of line pressure per the TCI kit, and the kit says the TV cable is used for the purpose of shift at PT, does the govenor play a part in shifting with this kit installed?? Thanks in advance

Re: 2 ??s @ man. valve body + trans. shift to HIGH
two things about the TCI vb:
1) Full line pressure all the time is the same as a manual valvebody in the fact that it increases the wear on the pump, thus decreasing the life of the pump. High pressure at part throttle would also tend to creat considreably more harsh shift characteristics, thus likely shortening the life of the planetaries.
2) Although it says minimum, thus leaving the reality up for debate, 200psi of line pressure is not enough at WOT.
I reccomend staying far away from anything TCI or B&M make for 4l60's(700r4). They have yet to step into this century on making/marketing the proper parts to make a modern transmission survive behind decent power levels.
Trans-go and Superior both make good products and are well worth their money.
As for your shift rpm, if you are 100% certain your TV cable is correct then yes, a govern recal kit should be used to adjust the shift point to the proper rpm for you motor.

Re: 2 ??s @ man. valve body + trans. shift to HIGH
I've heard good things about trans-go.....do you have a recommendation of a kit?? sorry so many questions, I don't have a ton of experience in transmissions.
Oh, also one more question too......I have heard and read that when you lower the WOT shift points (by adjusting govenor), it lowers to total line pressure in the transmission....I've seen it also described as >> "when I lowered my WOT shift points (w/governor), it shifts at right point now, BUT also it now feels like it changed PT shifting, almost like I re-adjusted my TV to lower setting, even though I didn't touch the TV cable and it is set at a higher setting..."
Any comments on this occuring......I just want to make sure I get this right the first go around...(It's my pet peve to do stuff twice....drives me nutty.)
Thanks again.

no one else??
Re: 2 ??s @ man. valve body + trans. shift to HIGH
Changing the weights and/or springs in the governor will change the shift "cuve" in it's entirity. The proper combination of weight vs spring will give you what you want for WOT vs partial throttle. - As an example; more weight and less spring may work great @ WOT, but less weight and more spring may give you the same WOT, but with part throttle shift point(s) more to your liking.
Changing the governor will in no way change the line pressure.

Re: 2 ??s @ man. valve body + trans. shift to HIGH
When I purchase a govenor 'kit', does it come with a guideline on what springs and weights to use and how to combine the two to get a desired effect, or is it just trial and error??
Re: 2 ??s @ man. valve body + trans. shift to HIGH
I've only used the kits once or twice, but yes, they had notes. I tend to mix-n-match springs/weights that I have laying around to get what I want.

Re: 2 ??s @ man. valve body + trans. shift to HIGH
Do you have any suggestion on how to mix-n-match the springs and weights?? the current combo shifts too high at WOT and slightly not high enough at PT.....and help would be GREATLY appreciated....I have been building cars for many years....but am just learning how to do transmissions myself. Thanks again.
