Found out what my T5 problem was (no 5th gear).........

I took the tranny back to the shop that rebuilt it Tuesday and called him up today to see what was going on. He said that I had removed the bolt above the reverse switch(thinking it was a fill plug), which cause the clip to pop off and I that I put the wrong tranny fluid in it (Mobil 1 Dexron 3) and caused some of the bearings to rust ???!!!

MAJOR B.S. I've messed around with enought T5's to know how to fill them and what fluid to use. I think he just threw it together in a hurry (Had it for 3 weeks and the silicon was still wet when I picked it up Friday) and wanted to place the blaime elsewhere. This is the last time I take him any work, and I had a couple of people recommended him, too.

Oh well I just had to vent, My question is : Will a little surface rust on the bearings hurt anything ?

Yeah, but will it hurt anything ? I mean It was rebuilt less than a week ago !! The tranny did set underneath my car for a day while I was pulling my auto, but it didn't rain or anything. I don't know what could cause the bearings to rust.

I don't see how the bearings would rust unless moisture got inside the case for a long time. Even if you deained all the fluid, it still should not rust b/c there is still a coating or film of trans fluid on the bearings. I could be wrong, but I don't think the bearings have rust on them. Even sitting for 3 weeks, I don't see how this could happen.

I'm laughing my @$$ off sitting here because what you did is all too familiar. I've been there too, thanks to an ignorant service station attendant. A few years back I took my Jeep to a service station to get the underside steam cleaned, and have all grease points, etc, lubed up. I told the guy to check and top up the transmission oil if necessary. I even pointed out to him that the filler plug was on the passenger side of the vehicle and NOT the the opposite side. Well, one his goons went ahead and took out what looked like a filler plug on the driver's side and topped up the transmission. A few hours later, I went back to the place to pick up the Jeep, unbeknownst to me that the jerk had pulled the wrong plug causing the 5th gear actuator lever to fall inside the case. Soon enough I discovered I had no 5th gear left. I went back the service station to raise some hell, and they showed me which plug they pulled to top up the transmission. Not only did I not have 5th gear any longer but the case was also filled almost to the top, and i had been charged for it. After getting a refund, i went back home, pulled the access cover from the floorboard, and took the shifter assembly off. The bolt on which the missing lever was mounted was in plain sight and from then on it was just a matter of fishing the lever out of the case, mounting it back on the draining excess fluid from the case. I was pretty damn pissed then but now I look back on it and laugh. Of course, in your case you'll have to drop the tranny all over again, remove the access cover and fish that sucker out. At least you'll know never to touch that bolt again .

I never touched the bolt, the guy siad that's what I MUST have done, because he never makes a mistake ! Anyway I didn't get a chance to look at the bearings, but he said they where rusting and accused me of putting some "other" kind of fluid in the tranny besides ATF. If he wasn't the one working on my transmission (and fixing the problem) I'd tell him a thing or two ....
