torque converter lock up problems
I have an '89 fibird formula with a 350 tuned port motor and a stock 700 r4 does anybody know how or what I have do to disconnect the lockup feature on my torque converter. I've been having issues where the car dies from idle when shifted into gear and dies on deceleration when coming to a stop if left in gear. If I pop it into nuetral it stays running, and I have have to feather the throttle before shifting back into gear or it dies. Can anybody help??

Re: torque converter lock up problems
I have the same problem. It's mechanical. You have to change the torque converter. It's locked up. My car's at my buddy's shop, and he checked the solenoid, and the oil pump. They are working fine. I have to get a new converter.
If your solenoid was faulty the car wouldn't change gears. I was told that by another transmission guy.
Hope this helps!

its a four wire plug above the shifter cable on the left side of the transmission just unplug it.and the transmission will shift with the lockup unpluged.

"If your solenoid was faulty the car wouldn't change gears." This is wrong. The transmission will still shift, and probably shift very hard. Get another torque converter, as the clutch in it has locked itself up. DO NOT try and feather the throttle to get it to move. YOU WILL ruin the forward clutch and/or the low reverse clutch in short order. Then the transmission will have to be removed to fix this.

Re: torque converter lock up problems
i'm having the same exact problem!!!! my cars driveable but i do have to be mindful of my deceleration as well as sitting at an idle while in drive, and when i look under my car the TC is always spinning or engaged i noticed after i did the swap about a month or 2 ago when the car was still on jackstnds the tires would spin while the car was in nuetral i thought it was weird but i didnt care i got my care back. but now it wants to stall a lot when im in D at idle i have my old TC so i guess im gonna put that in and see if it fixes the problem

did it help?????I just bought a 92 rs Camaro with a 305 tbi,, I had one of these years ago ,and had it for 11 years.. never had any of these issues??? We put my car up on a friends lift and discovered some had unplugged the lock up solenoid on the transmission. drivers side ???my friend thought it looked like the trans was re[placed..he thought maybe they had some kind of shift kit in it? other than the color of the car my last one was the same and it drove great, this one drives like a raped ape.. lights up the tires at will???not that im complaining about the performance side just trying to figure out why??? Transmission seems to shift fine and It down shifts fine..i do notice it winds out a bit sometimes when on it heavy to pull out onto the bypass?? but she takes off..just feels really different???any ideas????
