aftermaket beefed up T-5?

Hey guys, I was wondering if there are companies that make beefed up t-5's or other 5 or 6 speed manual transmissions that can fit directly into a 3rd gen without much modification. I could swear that I've seen f-bodies for sale on craigslist where the owner dropped in a 350 or 400 and claims that it has a beefed up t-5 (since the standard ones can't handle anything over a 305... right?). Any ideas? Thanks!

Like this link right here...

Re: aftermaket beefed up T-5?

There was a sponsor here:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/astr...per-t-5-a.html

Probably using the G-force gears in their units.. They are pricey and a T56 swap would be more economical, but for those folks needing a T5, it's the only way to go..

Not sure if they are still building GM units.. Their web site seems to only mention the Ford units..

The LT1 T56 swap (in the Sticky Posts at the top of the forum) is the easiest/cheapest way to get a heavy-duty manual trans in a 3rdgen.

Re: aftermaket beefed up T-5?

Yeah I looked at the LT1 swap but for me that's waaay too much work. By no means can I do that by myself. Do you know if there are performance shops that can do that swap? $1600 for a transmission isn't terrible I suppose. It would take some serious work to save up for it though lol. I actually found this Trans Am right here: http://newlondon.craigslist.org/cto/1241855721.html
I called the owner and he said it has a World Class transmission from Summit Racing that can handle 700 hp (i'm sure he exaggerated that number a little though). Any thoughts on that brand?
And is this transmission a direct fit? It's very expensive but just wondering.

Re: aftermaket beefed up T-5?

The T56 swap isn't hard, it's just documented in detail to cover all the questions that pop up.. I don't know why a pro-shop wouldn't be able to to a T56 swap.

I'd ask for documentation on the 700hp T5 before laying down $$ for it. I don't remember Summit selling any T5 other than a stock tremec one.

The Richmond 6sp (and TKO units) is not a direct swap (nothing would be execept a T5 on a manual car) and would be alot more $ beyond the purchase price, with no return-on-investment over a T56. The LT1-T56 was designed for the 4thgen fbody, so is the closest swap you're going to get beyond the T5.

Oh ok, yes and I definitely plan on asking for documentation regarding the Trans Am if I do visit it.
If I'd ever do a trans swap like that, I'd definitely have a shop do it. I'm not sure what to look for though... what do I type into yellowpages.com? I tried pro-shop but I was getting sporting goods LOL.

Look for a speed shop, or visit a local machineshop or engineshop and ask for a referral..

Re: aftermaket beefed up T-5?

The only T5 Summit sells is the Z-spec Ford trans, which will not work in a GM car. It is rated at 330 lbs/ft. of torque and has all of the upgrades that were made to the Ford WC T5s during production (harder gears, Cobra style pocket bearing, better synchros, etc.). You're getting fed some BS; there's no T5 rated to 700HP.

The toughest T5 parts on the market are from G-Force. They will work in either a Ford or GM WC T5, as all of the parts are the same except the input shaft and the mainshaft (G-Force makes GM specific components for these, even if they aren't advertised on their site). G-Force rates their parts to 500 lbs/ft. and 600HP under a very specific set of conditions. The parts are pricey, and availability has been known to be spotty, but if you must have the toughest T5 they are the only way to go.

My guess is you will have difficulty finding a shop to do a T56 swap, especially for a reasonable price. It's too much of an unknown for someone that's never done the swap, so they won't know how to price it. Your best bet is to do it yourself, or find someone who has done the swap that would be willing to do another one for you. Where do you live?

BTW, Bob Hanlon doesn't race a Mustang with a T5. He runs a Tremec. Years ago he ran a modified T5, but today he runs a Tremec and is the world's faster car with a Tremec in it. His website is www.hanlonmotorsports.com or you can call him at 610-469-2695, but Bob is usually only around in the evening or on Saturdays. His wife Linda answers the phone during the day, and she can help you with any parts ordering or availability questions, but for really technical stuff you need to speak with Bob.

Re: aftermaket beefed up T-5?

Good call TKO Performance...Hanlon did race with a T5 but not anymore.....thanks for the correction...You are right about Gforce, I had a clutchless 5 speed i bought from some prostock guys to run Comp Eliminator in early 90's and couldnt break it....I thought Hanlon would be cheaper...Have a good one.....

Re: aftermaket beefed up T-5?

Hanlon will be cheaper on the labor. He can't sell the parts cheaper because of very strict G-Force guidelines that are designed to keep their dealers from undercutting each other. The price they set is the price regardless of who you buy it from. I can get the parts from him a bit cheaper, but I have to promise to sell them at list price to my customers, which I've always done since I wouldn't want to put him in a bad position. He's realtively close to me so I used to drive up to him on a saturday to pick up parts if I had a couple of trannies in the shop to save on shipping. We had a couple of good conversations over the years. He's a good guy.
