Well, I changed my oil, swapped out the new Pro Systems carb, and mounted up some new Mickey Thompsons.
Take the car out for a little cruise. I get about 5 miles out and decided to hit it. The car hooked hard and pulled like a train. The I hear it! The loudest knocking I have ever heard from a car. Limp it back to the house and scrath my head for a while. Could only be trans, driveshaft or rear? The Flexplate and Torque converter are spinning fine.
Pull the rear cover and bam! rounded out ring gear and a pile of teeth!
This rear had Moser axles, long studs, Moroso alluminum cover, aftermarket 4.10's and Auburn carrier.
Think I should repair or replace?

repair would be the fast cheap way, but it will happen again. If the buget allows, maybe think about upgrading
9" time...never have to worry about it again...well...as fast as you are going currently. even with some spray you should be good on it. i love my moser 9" unit.
Man, i'm one of the lucky few that never had a problem with a 10 bolt. full nitrous launches in the 1.4x 60's and it held, bone stock rear end out of a 4th gen.
Cant wait to try it out with the turbo motor
fix it with another stocker for a cheap quick fix but definately need a new rear end.
Keep the ring/pinion to a 3.42 or maybe 3.73 and it will last longer. Less teeth on those gears so the teeth are actually thicker/stronger

Damn if I didn't just buy a brand new open car trailer for $2500. I would have had Moser make me up a killer 9 inch.
The funny thing is...I was the guy saying " Look how fast i'm going on a stock rear!" Who needs a 9 inch.....
I'm gonna have to patch it up for the season and save over the winter. God doesn't want me to have that new nitrous kit! Or maybe it's the wife,

Yep, swap it out for a stocker to keep it going and or save for a 12 bolt/9inch/60 of your choice. I for my Moser 12 bolt used for 150$, but i know i will never need to but a rearend again for my car.

Taller gears(numerically lower) have larger pinions gears, and thus more teeth on the pinion. More teeth = more contact area between the ring and pinion. I have said for a long time that the 7.5" 10-bolt will do quite well as long as you don't go lower(numerically higher) than a 3.73. Past that they become unstable really quickly.
Personally, I'd go 12-bolt or S60. 9" eats more power for nothing.

I hate to hear the news. I know you can taste 10's with the new carb and tires.
In your case, I would just pick up a 10-bolt and salvage what parts you can.

You know it. I guess i'll hold off on the 4800 stall also because if it can't hold the 10 incher. I know i'm in trouble with the 8"Originally Posted by bluegrassz

On Probation
9" housing, with a Strange aluminum centersection that takes GM 12-bolt car gear sets. The best of all worlds. if you do that, you can go 33 spline.

just replace your stocker for now and save for a 12 bolt or S60. S60 gets my vote though.

I'd put in a Moser 12 bolt. You wouldn't have to worry about it again.
moser 12 bolt would be my last choice. they don't use through bolts on the torque arm. if you want a 12 bolt, do a Strange unit, if you want a 9", moser all the way.
