Fixing a transmission problem

I think my transmission pressure regulator needs replaced. It makes a whining sound while idling and even louder when in reverse.

I'm not sure exactly what this devise does. What is the purpose of this regulator? What sort of problems will a bad regulator cause? How easy is it to replace one? What is the cost of a replacement?

I know their was a recall on these back in the day, but I'm not sure if mine is actually bad. If possable could you guys tell me some of the signs to look for?

Most likely your filter is restricted. You will need to correct why this is but you could for the time being replace the filter and fluid, just don't expect the problem to be truely cured.

Yes but is their any way to tell when your pressure regulator needs replaced?? What function does the pressure regulator serve?

The PR Valve works in conjunction with a whole bunch of other valves to keep a certain (variable) pressure in the tranny. Ironically this is not really a part that goes bad. To monitor the PR System you need a quality (Snap-On) pressure gauge.

I just had my tranny serviced not to long ago so I don't see a restricted filter being the problem.

That is unless something is generating particles that are again filling up the filter. I see this all the time, especially when the converter is going away.

how can you tell when your converter is going bad?

I just installed a new poly tranny mount so I'm able to fell vibrations a lot better now. when I'm driving just before it shifts into the next gear it starts to vibrate. Once it shifts to the next gear it feels smooth then when it goes for the next gear it starts to vibrate again and so on for each gear. Is this normal? Maybe it's something that I never noticed before due to the stock spongy rubber mount.

I am sure the KM gauge is probably OK but I think you have seen/used the Mac/Matco/et al/ gauge. I have see way too many blow the heads off and if you happen to be holding it inside the car on a road test....

Actually since you probably do 4L80E's, I would strongly recommend the Snappy high pressure gauge that they sell. It reads between 0-500 but has a 'cushion' that runs up to 1500 PSI which is great if you are checking out a 4L80E that has a high pressure/breaking parts problem. 600-700 PSI on a 300-400 PSI gauge can be downright dangerous when the gauge is in your hand.
