Okay i pull out of my friends driveway and i had it in drive and it stayed in first gear, and after a couple of feet it felt like the trans. was in nuetral. then it hit second gear at 3500 rpm????? and i milked the car the rest of the way home when after a mile it finally fell into third but no overdrive.?? The night before not the slighest of a problem, and i wasn't beating on it. I just put a B&M street strip shift kit in about 3,000 miles ago. I run mobil one sythetic in the trans and the motor. Sounds like a broken 2-4 band. Time for tranny to come out and re-build.

Yeah, something sounds funny w/ the band. Do you have reverse? I've never seen a busted reaction shell in a tranny that was built prior to '96, Don't know if its a design change, or just from working at a new car dealer, but if it is busted, you'll loose reverse also.

I have reverse i have neutral and drive, they all regester into what selected gear but when in overdrive or drive it won't shift to second gear until 3500rpm. I have a feeling a piece of debris is clogging something it's been like 2 months after i put the shift kit in and it has been flawless. Should i try and flush out the trans. first by running like 15 quarts through it? The only thing i can say is that night before i had to slow down fast and i downshifted from drive to second gear to help the car slow down. but that was it ???

My trick to determine a broken band is to measure servo cover travel. Most of the ones that I have seen broken will travel in excess of .250" (1/4") Spec is .064-.125"
This is done by mounting a dial indicator on the servo cover, then pushing it in as far as it will go.

Did you notice the problems immediatly after your forced 3-2 shift?

I had the same problem after my shift kit, the throttle valve was stuck in the valve body. Wouldn't upshift except under W.O.T. Check this before pulling the tranny.

Does it feel rougher when you put it ito gear? If so, you likely have a sticky throttle valve in the VB. The B&M NON-shift kit doesn't fix this. You could also have the TV cable not set right either. And yes you could have the not uncommon burned band/drum.

also check the cable to be sure it is not kinked, melted, or frayed. I had a 82 cadillac eldorado and the trans would not shift in any gear till very high rpm like 3500 to 4000 rpm very high for a diesel, then bang it shifted, it was intermintant and finally I shelled the torque converter, the insides went to shreads and it would not move, the tv cable was frayed and stuck in the full throttle position.

Re: 700r4 Trans. isn't shifting up ???????

I have a similar problem when the tranny is cold. Once it warms up, the throttle valve doesnt seem to stick anymore. The shift to second however, once warmed up, is pretty forceful. I had AAMCO look at the tranny and put new fluid dexron IV in it last year. They said everything looked good. Now a year later my tranny starts this business. This car is not a daily driver and the fluid is still clean. I hope my 700r4 is ok.
