rockcrusher

ok, someone told me that their buddy has a rockcrusher for sale for $250. The reason he is selling it for so cheap is because he has 3 of them. Anyways, im kind of unfamiliar with rockcrushers. are they sort of like a stronger th350? My camaro has a 700r4 in it right now. what would i have to change to get the rockcrusher to fit? And do you guys think it would be worth the swap? any info on this type of tranny would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

A"Rockcrusher" is a Muncie M22 4 Speed Manual Transmission. They're fairly hard to find nowadays, and parts are expensive too. This used to be a very desirable trans, due to the almost straight-cut gears. This made it stronger, but noisier.
Probably not a very appropriate trans for a third gen, but fine in a first or second,if you don't need overdrive.
Still, at $250 it sounds too good to be true.
I've seen them go for twice that,in less than perfect condition.

yep 500 is a fairly good price, you could double your money if in fact it is a m22. make sure before you buy it then put the money towards a tremac or t56 for your thirdgen.

The site below describes the suttle differences between the Muncies. Just scroll down some.

Yeah, you can't be too careful when it comes to identifying a true M-22. Nine times out of ten, it turns out to be a M-21 or M-20, which isn't all bad considering these stand up to almost as much abuse. But you don't want to spend more money thinking it's an actual M-22. I run a M-21 in my '69 Camaro, but when it comes to my third gen car, I'd run a T-56 six speed if I ever wanted to swap in a manual trans. A lot of people I've talked to that run the "rockcrusher" trans say the amazing amount of noise they make can really drize you crazy. A M-21 will pretty much stand up to anything short of a radical big block while being much more quiet. A couple of differences I've seen on the M-22s to help identify them is that they usually have a 26 spline input shaft instead of a ten spline and a drain plug on the side of the case.

I was in a 65 vette with a four speed. I'm guessing it was a M-22 'cause it was VERY noisey, almost sounds like a bad bearing. But at highway speed (4 gear) the a lot of the noise went away (direct drive).

sorry, i havent been on in a while. why would it not be a good idea to put a rock crusher in a 3rd gen? noise factor? i dont understand. i was told that it was one of the best transmissions for chevy's. maybe you could elaborate. thanks for your time.

If it is a RockCrusher, jump on it like a cheap whøre. Then sell it for $500.

The M21 will hold up fine to about 450HP. I had a 72 Nova that had a ~420HP 350. I never had a problem with the trans. The shifter linkage sucked major, butt the trans was fine.
