what is the right trans for this engine?

Ok, I am doing an engine swap soon. I am unsure which it is yet, it will be one of the following:

350 (to 355): trans/gears?
383: trans/gears?
400 (to 406): trans/gears?

I have a v6/t-5 currently (stock rear-end.)

I want to keep a manual trans, but the builder is suggesting an auto.

So, for those engines, what is the best manual trans/rear-end combo?
also, for kicks the best auto/rear-end combo.

Any info/insight is appreciated!

A T-56 with steep gears, 3.73's or 4.10's, would be cool.

agreed t-56 out of an lt1 car. depends on how much cam you want to run though, rember 6 in a t-56 is .5/1 overdrive. my buddy when to 4.30s in his fourth gen and it still doesnt like to cruise down the road under 65 in 6

but id say with a built 700r4 you could run 4.10's thats what im goin to. 3.73 wernt quite enough for 55mph.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm gonna talk to my builder and see what he thinks of your responses and see if we can get me setup correctly.
There's no rush on this project, I'm researching at the moment.

Went with a 700r4 mated to a 305 (from same car)

This swap is almost done; I'll post a new thread when it is.

That sounds much less exciting then the options you posted.

One question for you:

Yes not as exciting, but the deal for the original motor fell through and I stepped away from it for a few years. Then I got my hands on a decent 92 parts car that had a solid running drivetrain, so I opted to go with the 305/auto for now.

I plan on getting another motor down the road.

As for the gears I have the 3:42 from the v6 still in it.
