HELP,
ok,i just put a new column in my 92 rs.
well,it's not new,but diffrent.

i just put an 89 column in my 92 rs and everything has been going just great.
i have drove the car at lease 200 miles,or more with no problems.
this morning i get in it and head about 7 miles one way to the cionvenient store.
when i pull back in my driveway my steering wheel is loose.
i pull the horn button for better look.
the big bolt that holds wheel on is tight.
the steering wheel is very loose and just wiggles back/forth.
nothing moves but the wheel.
anyone tell me what my problem is?

i have driven it for over a week with no problems.
how can it just all a sudden get loose??

i seem to be having nothing but bad luck with 92 camaros and steering columns.

HELP,
jd
here is my email.

Re: LOOSE STEERING WHEEL??HELP

Are you saying that the shaft the wheel is bolted to doesn't move? That doesn't seem possible if the bolt is tight as it's splined.

the shaft moves with the wheel, but you can't see that.
i am trying to say that the steering wheel is loose from the rest of the column.
the column is stiff, but the wheel wiggles up,down, all around.
the shaft bolt is tight. everything works fine like tilt, dimmer, turn signals.
it is just the wheel is loose sitting still,or going down the road.
it is weird, but i am most concerned if it can possibly come off some how?
or if it can possibly break free from the column so that it will not steer
when i turn the wheel?
i drove it finally after i studied it a little.
i can't see how it can break free from the column?
i may be wrong though. i just can't understand why it does it?

anyone else ever have this problem?
it seems that if the bolts came loose that it should have shown signs of being loose earlier.

when i left the house it was fine.
i drove about 14 miles and didn't notice anything till i pulled back into my driveway.
weird,it is.....Boooooo

Re: LOOSE STEERING WHEEL??HELP

That sounds like a bad bearing in the column. There are two bearings (upper and lower) that support the shaft the wheel is connected to. Not sure if they are available or not. It might be easier to get another column. There are lots of them around.

yeah, the bad is that i just put this column in a week ago.
i think those 4 bolts may have came out,not sure.
but i wonder if it can come completely free of control?

i mean, can i drive it just as long as the center bolt is tight?
can it come loose and not be able to steer if the center bolt is tight?

just until i can get to a place to fix it?

thanks for everyones input

My first question is: Why on earth would this subject be in the "Transmission and Drivetrain" section?

Thats not how it works.

You probably received no response because its this issue has been discussed many times. With a simple search, you wouldn't even had to ask the question.

Re: LOOSE STEERING WHEEL??HELP

arrowgta,i did a search and couldn't find it. i may not have
done it correctly, but i did search.
now that i have people that actually want to help i guess
i don't need anymore of your remarks as they really
did nothing to help my problem.
you only made remarks as to how you do things.
excuse me if i didn't follow your directions top the letter.
it easy to give some one help without all the other bull.
i appreciate all the info i recieved and will ask the
thread to be removed now.
it's ok to delete.
thanks,
jd
p.s.i found the problem.
the snap ring has came off the actual back of steering wheel.
i am gonna remove the steering wheel and replace it with a new one.
it seems to have lost it's spring.
