higher stall 27 spline gm converter?

I'll keep this as short as possible,Doing an engine swap and want to put a higher stall converter on while i can get at it.I was going to use an S-10 converter but after counting splines,i realize i have the 27 spline and the S-10 converter that everyone uses has 30 splines. Is there a factory style converter that came from a 84 and under car or truck that has a 2200 or so stall?I'm thinking maybe 82' Vette perhaps? This is for a 700R4 by the way and i'm on a bit of a budget. Thanks for any and all help.

I have PDQ's catalog at home, ( they remanufacture stock converters for around $150 ) but off the top of my head I know that B&M offers a 2400 stall for the 27 spline, though it runs about $330.

Re: higher stall 27 spline gm converter?

Update;Just got off the phone with the local trans shop, the guy was very helpful and we talked about re-stalling a stock type converter to about 2500 rpm to meet my needs and exchanging it for mine. This sounded like a good way to go until i asked how much all this would cost me.My warm fuzzy feeling went away when he said it would probably be close to 400$.?!I'd fourage on Ebay but the shipping charges are murder for us Canadians.
Does a restalled stock converter work well?I'd like to hear from someone who had this done and how they liked it before i shell out that kind of money.(Thanks for the reply Atilla ).

Unless you're desperate to get this car back on the road today, give me one more day. I smashed my thumb last night and instantly forgot all about bringing the PDQ info today, but I will bring it tomorrow.

I looked it up, GM did do a 2200 stall, used mostly in the Monte Carlo SS L69, so ask several local transmission shops until you find one who'll be fair, helpful and reasonable. You should be able to get a rebuilt one for under $200.

The TH200-4R used a 27-spline converter, and it will work with a TH700R-4 27-spline.

Think "Turbo Regal".

I do have a restalled converter, done by a local outfit. They only charged me $125 exchange, but that was in 2001. I'm still running it today. I'm planning on upgrading over the winter.

FWIW, my current tranny is an '83 version, I had the input changed to 30 spline when the 350 went in. A fellow racer is a GM tech, does tranny work on the side, and did this work in exchange for an extra TH700 I had. Basically completely rebuilt the thing for me while he had it. Nice to know people sometimes.

Re: higher stall 27 spline gm converter?

I never even thought of the G bodies. That's just what i was looking for.In the last couple days,i've been in contact with a company called BDR converters. He said he can custom build me a converter for my car specs in the 2400-2800 range, all for around 200$.I thought that was pretty doable compared to 400$ for re-stalled stocker.I thought that 2400-2800 stall might be alittle too high, but that's what he recommended for my application(new motor pending). He seems to know his stuff and his customers seem happy,so i might give it shot.

Re: higher stall 27 spline gm converter?

your local torque converter builder should be able to modify your stock converter by bending the fins over. should cost the same as a normal rebuild as long as they're an honest shop. all they do is take a long bar with a notch in the end and slip it over the fins one at a time and bend it over. I get em for $100 all day long. hope that helps. the stall goes to approx. 2100 if yur lucky this way.
