Rebuilding 700r4, best kit to buy

My trans started leaking so I thought it was just a front seal, I was wrong. The Trans shop said it needed a complete rebuild for a total price of $1,400!!! So I'm going to rebuild it myself. I've checked out the Pro-Built kits and they seem to have all that I would need. My question is what type of rebuild kits have you used and what was the quality of the parts? If you have links post them also. This will be my first automatic trans rebuild, but with the shop manual, ATSG book, and a rebuild video I should be good to go. Thanks in advance.

Re: Rebuilding 700r4, best kit to buy

I've heard good things about Pro-Built Kits and the guy that packages them (Dana) seems very knowledgeable about the 700's. Rebuild kits are around $550 and they will handle 600+ horsepower. I am interested in rebuilding my transmission too versus spending $$$ for somebody else. Let us know how it goes and keep us updated on your progress!

Thanks, I feel that the ProBuilt kits are very good, but what other kits has been used and what was the quality.
I'm planning to do this with my 14 year old son and every major step will be recorded. We are a homeschooling family and this is part of his Auto Skills class. This past spring he helped me swap heads on my '95 TA conv., that was fun... We are also rebuilding an LT1 to go in a Datsun 240z. The tranny should be fun...

I'll post pictures also during the process. I'm planning on starting this around the Dec.15. My trans is already out so I just need to order the rebuild kit and get a couple of specialty tools. After my son and I finish this we have a 4l60E to rebuild for the LT1, the trans has been sitting for a couple of years, my son gets to do all the work with me being the helper.
