700R4 Torque Converter Lock Up

I have a 86 Camaro Berlinetta with a V6 2.8L. The torque converter doesn't lock up automatically, but I added a switch and can lock it up manually. The temperature gauge on the dash doesn't work. Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix it?

Re: 700R4 Torque Converter Lock Up

Now the car runs at normal temp, the torque converter tries to lock up occasionally. I can lock it up manually whenever I want so I think trans is ok.....any ideas?

The lock-up has started engaging erratically (on and off within a few seconds) even at steady throttle on flat ground.

ANY IDEAS?

Yes, get rid of that manual switch and go back to the stock set up. Why you need a manual switch on a 2.8 V6???

It is on stock set up. The converter used to not lock up at all, so I put a switch on to lock it up on the highway.

If it is a 700R4 it should lockup at 40 MPH in OD, if not get it fixed. A manual swich for you is a bandaid.

huh....it tries to lock up in 3rd also

I know it's a band-aid, but I put most of my car funds into my 4th gen 700 hp camaro

Just trying to figure it out myself since I do all of my own work.

Re: 700R4 Torque Converter Lock Up

Most likely cause of erratic lockup is the brake switch although if you're manually having it lock by jumping the ALDL terminals and it works that rules out the brake switch. A test light across those terminals will also show whether the ECM is commanding lockup or not.

If the ECM is commanding lock/unlock erratically I'd look at the TPS. Erratic TPS voltage confuses the ECM into 'thinking' the throttle position is changing. Same with MAP readings but the TPS is more prone to failure in my experience.

Well TPS was in adjustment....and tested with voltmeter and it is fine

I will test computer and see when it is commanding lock-up when I get a chance

Re: 700R4 Torque Converter Lock Up

Installed a new 700r4 and converter. Tans stays locked in all gears except 1st and reverse. It will unlock if I press brake. I also removed my manual switch.

Is there a pressure switch and if so where is it?
