4th gen rear end

I know that there is a tech artical about this and I plan on doing this to my car I just wanted to double check that it is okay to use a 2002 SS rear end on my 91 Z also what do you guys think about the price and what is the stock gear ratio on this rear? if its still stock of course, also is there anything bad to run into going with a 4th gen rear??

Here is the link

Re: 4th gen rear end

Guess it's probably OK - I paid about 1/2 that for mine, but I'm on the opposite coast where we don't have movie stars, so things cost less.

On the gearing and whether or not it's actually a Posi rear - the only way to truly know is to pop the cover - for $400 if the seller wont let you remove the cover to verify gears/posi I'd definitely pass.

Re: 4th gen rear end

thats what i was thinking if he doesnt let me than he can sell it else where. 400 seems a little high in my opinion my buddy got his for exactly what you got yours at If it is a true posi and everthing looks up i will talk the guy down are they like usually 3.42's?

Re: 4th gen rear end

spin the d-shaft and count the revolutions that will give you the gearing.
when you turn one wheel forward dose the other go forward or backward?
posi= both forward right?
maby im mistaken

With the zexel posi, you can't do the traditional posi check. You will have to pull the cover to verify it does have a posi.

And the seller didn't state what trans was in the car. A 6 spd. car should have a 3.42, but again the only way to be positive is to pull the cover and count.

I paid $250 for the same thing with a 3.42 ratio. Took the brakes off, and sold the rear with gears and posi for $200. Was a very happy camper to say the least.

Re: 4th gen rear end

Does any one have a link that shows the internal differences between an open and posi rear end? Be spending most of this week looking for one and would like to try and make sure its a posi. Hoping to find a zexel

You can see an open as well as several kinds of limited slips in the following FAQ:

I gave $140 for my disk rear from a 94 z with 3.23s. swapped in a set of 3.73s and love it.
