I've got a Dana 60 from strange and it leaks fluid out the axels. I was out test driving it the other day and tried to see how fast it could turn the last corner to my house and the outside wheel is full of fluid from the differential. I'm wondering if its too full ,or am I missing a seal?

 

Bad or missing axle seals.

 

It probably has the o rings on the axle bearings. These sometimes cause problems. If the housing ends are made for the stick axle seals then install a set and it should be fine. If they are not made for the axle seals then you can remove thee axles, clean out the housing ends and the outside of the bearings and smear some RTV sealant around the inside of the housing ends. Then push the axles back in and it should seal them.

wow, that would suck. gear lube has that particular odor that lingers for a loooong time.

 

I would personally jack the rearend up and pull on the tires out towards you to make sure they arent loose, im prtty sure i have a broken c clip in my rearend and its havin the same exact issues with leaking. I can still drive with mine but i can move my driver tire a bit.

 

There is a very small clearance. If you had a broken c-clip, you'd be holding the whole axle right now.

 

Get a C-clip Eliminator kit & be done with that problem.

A c clip eliminator kit will actually cause that problem. There are very few c clip eliminator kits that won't leak oil when used on the street. Most of the time they leak more than any other type of axle retention. If you have c clip axles and you have a lot of axle end play then you probably have an Auburn differential that is worn out. As they wear they allow more end play in the axles. Replacing the differential will cure the axle end play problem. A broken c clip will not cause an axle seal leak unless the axle came out.

If I am remembering the right DANA axle, the seals are located just outside the carrier bearings. If this is the case it's VERY easy to damage the seals on removal or installation of the axles with the splines. You wouldn't know until a situation like this came up.

 

Strange uses their own houisng ends on their Dana 60. If they are the same as the older ends that I have seen then there is no room for a seal in them. They use the axle bearings with the o ring, which doesn't always work well for holding the oil in. Without knowing what type of sel is in this rear end it's going to be hard to figure out exactly what is wrong.
